What is a G550 pilot?

G550 pilots are professional aviators who operate the Gulfstream G550, a long-range business jet manufactured by Gulfstream Aerospace. Their responsibilities include planning flights, conducting pre-flight inspections, navigating, communicating with air traffic control, and ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers and crew. G550 pilots must have specific training and certification for this aircraft, along with meeting all regulatory requirements set by aviation authorities. They may work for private individuals, corporations, charter companies, or government agencies. Their role demands excellent technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle complex situations in flight.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a G550 pilot?

To thrive as a G550 Pilot, you need an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, extensive flight hours, and type rating specific to the Gulfstream G550. Familiarity with advanced avionics systems, flight management computers, and global navigation tools is essential, as are recurrent training certifications. Excellent decision-making, communication, and situational awareness are crucial soft skills for ensuring passenger safety and smooth operations. These skills and qualifications are vital for handling complex international flights and maintaining the highest safety standards in business aviation.

What are some common challenges G550 pilots face when operating international flights?

Gulfstream G550 pilots frequently encounter challenges during international operations, such as navigating complex airspace regulations, adapting to different airport procedures, and managing extended duty times due to long-haul flights. Pilots must stay current with varying customs and immigration requirements, as well as coordinate with ground handling teams across multiple countries. Effective communication with international air traffic controllers and thorough pre-flight planning are essential to ensure safety and efficiency during these global missions.

Job description

Gulfstream G550 First Officer
Department: Pilot
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Van Nuys
Compensation: $130,000 - $160,000 / year
Description
Silver Air Private Jets is looking for a G550 SIC to join one of our most established owner accounts in Van Nuys. This is a unique seat for a pilot who wants more than hours-it is an opportunity to develop under two veteran Silver Air pilots with deep international experience, strong owner relationships, and years of operational knowledge to pass along.
The aircraft supports a thoughtful mix of owner and charter flying, providing exposure to both highly personalized private operations and the pace and variety of charter. The owners are warm, personable, and deeply appreciative of great service. They enjoy food, hospitality, and the experience surrounding the trip, and they value a crew that understands their preferences.
We are looking for someone who wants to become an exceptional Gulfstream pilot. A G550 type rating is strongly preferred, but equally important are aircraft handling, disciplined approaches, consistently smooth landings, situational awareness, and the humility to keep learning. This is a crew that notices the details and an owner who appreciates them.
For an ambitious SIC earlier in their Gulfstream career, there is considerable upside here. You will have experienced pilots beside you, international flying in front of you, and an environment where you can build the judgment and proficiency required for greater responsibility over time.
This is not a rotational or commuter position. The right candidate should live in, or be prepared to relocate to, the Los Angeles/Van Nuys market and become part of the crew and account-not simply fly the schedule.
What you'll be doing:
  • Reviewing the maintenance status of the aircraft to ensure airworthiness.
  • Conducting proper pre-flight inspection in accordance with the approved Aircraft Flight Manual.
  • Completing check of weather and facilities along the route to be flown and airports to be used, including alternate airports.
  • Ensuring the flight is conducted in accordance with the policies and procedures of Silver Air and applicable Federal Aviation Regulations.
  • Ensuring the safety of all passengers, aircraft, and crew.
  • Accurately completing all trip paperwork in accordance with Silver Air procedures.

To do well in this role, you'll need:
  • Total time in all aircraft = 1500 hours.
  • Multi-engine time = 1000 hours.
  • Total Turbine time = 500 hours preferred.
  • Type Rating. Typed in the G450/550 or GV preferred.
  • Valid First Class Medical Certificate. This is required.
  • Previous Part 135 experience. This is preferred but not required.
  • CANPASS authorization. You'll need the ability to obtain and maintain CANPASS authorization for unrestricted travel to/from Canada as a commercial pilot.
  • Strong customer service skills. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) will need to be demonstrated with all levels of employees and clients. Communication must always be delivered with a superior level of professionalism.
  • High level of detail. You'll need to be highly organized with the ability to thrive in changing environments and the flexibility for frequently changing priorities.
  • Excellent time management skills. You'll need to be able to work on an on-call basis, with the ability to work well under pressure and to multi-task. Silver Air is a 24/7 organization, so this role requires a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and Holidays.
  • Strong people skills. You'll need to be a team player who can provide valued contributions to our business and clients.
