How much do fusion engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for fusion engineer in the United States is $49.97, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $40.87 and $57.21 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. Fusion engineers working in nuclear fusion research or energy sectors may also reach this level with significant expertise and project responsibilities.

What are some common challenges Fusion Engineers face when working on large-scale fusion projects?

Fusion Engineers often encounter challenges related to working with complex, interdisciplinary teams and integrating highly specialized systems, such as superconducting magnets, vacuum systems, and plasma control technologies. Navigating stringent safety protocols and adapting to rapidly evolving research findings are also key aspects of the role. Additionally, these engineers must frequently troubleshoot unexpected issues during experimental runs and collaborate closely with physicists, technicians, and software specialists to drive progress toward project milestones.

What is the holy grail of energy?

The holy grail of energy refers to achieving sustainable, clean, and virtually limitless energy sources. Fusion energy, which involves replicating the process that powers the sun, is considered a leading candidate because it produces abundant energy with minimal environmental impact and produces no long-lived radioactive waste. Fusion engineers work on developing reactors that can safely and efficiently harness this power for practical use.

What are fusion engineers?

Fusion engineers are professionals who work on the development and maintenance of fusion energy systems, which aim to replicate the process that powers the sun to generate clean and virtually limitless energy on Earth. Their responsibilities include designing, testing, and optimizing fusion reactors and related technologies. Fusion engineers often collaborate with physicists, materials scientists, and other engineers to solve complex challenges in plasma confinement, materials durability, and energy conversion. They typically work in research institutions, national laboratories, or private companies focused on fusion energy. A strong background in physics, engineering, and advanced mathematics is essential for this role.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, and aerospace engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often includes bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing, particularly in technology and energy sectors.

How much do fusion engineers make?

Fusion engineers typically earn a median salary ranging from $80,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Senior professionals with specialized skills in plasma physics, engineering, or related fields can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $150,000. Compensation may also include benefits such as research funding, project bonuses, and opportunities for advancement in the energy or research sectors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fusion Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fusion Engineer, you need a strong foundation in physics, materials science, and engineering principles, typically supported by an advanced degree in nuclear, mechanical, or electrical engineering. Familiarity with plasma simulation software, CAD tools, and knowledge of reactor control systems and safety protocols are commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are key soft skills that help address complex technical challenges. These skills and qualities are vital for advancing fusion technology and ensuring the safety and efficiency of experimental or commercial fusion reactors.

Job description

We are looking for a strong engineer in the DRIVE Road structure / Online mapping / Context Fusion team. In this role, you will help craft and guide the future of our autonomous driving solution for providing a complete 3D world model including fusing signals between map and perception. You will be working closely with our perception and planning teams in providing a world model that is complete and able to drive in the most challenging roads and intersections in the U.S and China. It is a very exciting role that provides a breadth of interesting areas and is central to our vision in AV. Are you interested in inventing human level AI for navigation in the unconstrained world under any conditions? If so, join us!

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Develop core functionality for autonomous driving in all geographies based on the fusion of SOTA perception DNN and map signals.

  • Generate real-time 3D world model utilized by planning, incorporating a variety of inputs from sensors and external sources.

  • Enable HD mapless driving in complex urban scenarios by creating enriched BEV models of the world.

  • Enable L3 level autonomy in highway scenarios by creating accurate, reliable and safe models of the world from camera, lidar, radar perception and map signals

  • Build fused static obstacles and occupancy grids and build occlusion masks to enrich AV scenarios.

  • Be a technology leader by providing the team guidance on approaches to be taken to solve the hardest of AV problems. Be a hands-on collaborator with the team.

  • Mentoring strong engineers within the team.

  • Make sure our algorithms work well on large amounts of real and synthetic data, in a diverse range of environments and conditions

  • Produce code and designs following automotive quality and safety standards.

What We Need To See:

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or related fields or equivalent experience

  • 8+ years of experience, with at least 2+ years in the AV or robotics industry.

  • 2+ years of experience technically leading areas

  • Passion for robotics and autonomous vehicles

  • Drive to learn new things and tackle meaningful problems

  • Outstanding communication and cross-team collaboration especially with multinational teams across the globe.

  • Independent and analytical software engineering skills

  • Software development experience on embedded or automotive platforms.

Ways To Stand Out From The Crowd:
