What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Functional QA Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional QA Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of software testing principles, typically backed by a relevant degree or experience in quality assurance. Familiarity with test management tools (like JIRA or TestRail), defect tracking systems, and sometimes automation frameworks is commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving ability, and collaboration skills help Functional QA Engineers effectively work with development teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure thorough testing, clear documentation, and high-quality software releases.

How does a Functional QA Engineer typically collaborate with developers and product managers during a project lifecycle?

Functional QA Engineers work closely with developers by reviewing requirements and user stories, clarifying acceptance criteria, and providing feedback early in the development process. They often participate in sprint planning sessions and daily stand-ups to stay aligned with the team. Throughout the project, they communicate frequently with product managers to ensure test cases accurately reflect business needs and to report on test results or potential issues. This cross-functional collaboration helps identify defects early and ensures a higher-quality final product.

What are Functional QA Engineers?

Functional QA Engineers are professionals who focus on testing software applications to ensure that they meet specified requirements and function correctly from an end-user perspective. They design, execute, and document test cases based on functional specifications to identify defects and verify that new features work as intended. Their work is essential for delivering high-quality software products by catching issues early in the development lifecycle. Functional QA Engineers often collaborate closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to ensure comprehensive test coverage and smooth product releases.

What is a functional QA engineer?

A functional QA engineer is responsible for testing software to ensure it meets specified requirements and functions correctly. They create test cases, execute manual or automated tests, and identify defects to improve software quality, often using tools like Selenium or JIRA. Strong understanding of testing methodologies and attention to detail are essential for this role.

What is the difference between Functional Qa Engineer vs Manual Tester?

AspectFunctional Qa EngineerManual Tester

ResponsibilitiesDesigns test plans, automates tests, analyzes resultsPerforms manual test execution, reports bugs
Industry UsageSoftware development, QA teamsSoftware testing, QA departments

The Functional Qa Engineer's role is more technical and automation-oriented, making it suitable for teams aiming to streamline testing processes.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, data engineering, or systems architecture can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and working in high-demand industries or companies. Roles often require expertise in programming languages, cloud platforms, or complex system design, along with relevant certifications and leadership responsibilities.

Is QA replaced by AI?

As a Functional QA Engineer, AI tools can assist in automating repetitive testing tasks and analyzing large data sets, but they do not fully replace the need for human oversight, critical thinking, and understanding of complex user scenarios. Human testers are essential for designing test cases, interpreting results, and ensuring software quality. AI enhances QA processes but is currently a complement rather than a replacement for skilled QA professionals.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, data engineering, or systems architecture can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options, particularly in large tech companies or startups with significant growth potential.

Job description

Data QA Engineer

Data quality isn't just a checkbox-it's the foundation of every smart business decision. Our client is building something meaningful: a data environment where accuracy is non-negotiable and the people who protect it are valued. As a Data QA Engineer, you'll be at the center of that mission-designing and building the automated testing frameworks that keep data pipelines clean, reliable, and trustworthy. If you're the kind of engineer who loves digging into data discrepancies, writing elegant SQL, and creating structure where there wasn't any before, this is the role you've been looking for.

As part of our process after applying, you may receive an invitation from our AI Recruiter Avery for a short conversation that lets you share more about your background beyond your resume. For questions, contact

  • Job Type: Full-Time

  • Location: Remote

  • Compensation: This job is expected to pay about $100,000 - $130,000

  • No Visa Sponsorship Available for this role

What You'll Do:

  • Build automated data testing frameworks from scratch, including test plans, validation logic, regression suites, and data observability checks across ETL/ELT pipelines and BI outputs.
  • Write and optimize SQL queries to validate row counts, uniqueness, referential integrity, business rules, and source-to-target reconciliation.
  • Investigate data discrepancies-trace issues from reports back to source systems, file detailed defect reports, and partner with engineering to validate fixes.
  • Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and manage scheduled test runs to enforce data quality gates across deployments.
  • Mentor team members on data testing best practices and take ownership of high-impact QA initiatives that raise the bar for data reliability.

What Gets You the Job:

  • Expert-level SQL skills with hands-on experience writing complex queries for data validation, reconciliation, and pipeline testing-this is the most critical requirement.
  • Proven ability to build automated data testing frameworks from the ground up using tools such as Great Expectations, dbt tests, or similar-not just working within existing ones.
  • Python proficiency sufficient for scripting automation, building test utilities, and integrating with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Git).
  • Background in data QA, ETL testing, data validation, or data engineering-not traditional UI/front-end QA.
  • Strong analytical communication skills with the ability to investigate messy data, identify root causes, and make a clear case to engineering teams, business stakeholders, or vendors.

Ready to build something that matters? Apply now and take the next step in a role where your technical depth will directly shape how a company trusts its data.
