Functional Qa Engineer information

What is a functional QA engineer?

Functional QA Engineers are professionals who focus on testing software applications to ensure that they meet specified requirements and function correctly from an end-user perspective. They design, execute, and document test cases based on functional specifications to identify defects and verify that new features work as intended. Their work is essential for delivering high-quality software products by catching issues early in the development lifecycle. Functional QA Engineers often collaborate closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to ensure comprehensive test coverage and smooth product releases.

How does a functional QA engineer typically collaborate with developers and product managers during a project lifecycle?

Functional QA Engineers work closely with developers by reviewing requirements and user stories, clarifying acceptance criteria, and providing feedback early in the development process. They often participate in sprint planning sessions and daily stand-ups to stay aligned with the team. Throughout the project, they communicate frequently with product managers to ensure test cases accurately reflect business needs and to report on test results or potential issues. This cross-functional collaboration helps identify defects early and ensures a higher-quality final product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional QA engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional QA Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of software testing principles, typically backed by a relevant degree or experience in quality assurance. Familiarity with test management tools (like JIRA or TestRail), defect tracking systems, and sometimes automation frameworks is commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving ability, and collaboration skills help Functional QA Engineers effectively work with development teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure thorough testing, clear documentation, and high-quality software releases.

What is the difference between Functional Qa Engineer vs Manual Tester?

AspectFunctional Qa EngineerManual Tester
CertificationsISTQB, CSTE, CSQAISTQB Foundation, ISTQB Agile
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with developers, automation teamsPrimarily executes test cases manually
ResponsibilitiesDesigns test plans, automates tests, analyzes resultsPerforms manual test execution, reports bugs
Industry UsageSoftware development, QA teamsSoftware testing, QA departments

While both roles focus on testing software quality, a Functional Qa Engineer often develops automated tests and designs comprehensive test strategies, whereas a Manual Tester primarily executes test cases manually. The Functional Qa Engineer's role is more technical and automation-oriented, making it suitable for teams aiming to streamline testing processes.

Are functional QA engineers paid well?

Functional QA engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. Professionals with skills in automation tools and testing frameworks often command higher pay, especially in organizations emphasizing quality assurance and software testing processes.

Is a Functional QA Engineer still in demand?

Yes, a Functional QA Engineer remains in demand as companies prioritize software quality assurance, especially with the growth of Agile and DevOps practices. Skills in manual testing, test case design, and familiarity with testing tools like Selenium or JIRA are valuable in the current job market.

Job description

What is the Opportunity?

The QA Engineer III  will be responsible for leading and executing functional quality assurance activities for complex banking and financial applications. The role requires strong hands-on manual testing expertise, practical automation experience, thorough test documentation skills, and solid database validation capabilities. The engineer will own end-to-end test coverage across backend processes, integrations, APIs, file-based workflows, and data validations, while working closely with developers, business analysts, product teams, and other QA engineers to ensure release quality.

What will you do?

  • Own functional, regression, integration, system, and end-to-end testing for complex applications and backend workflows.
  • Analyze business and technical requirements, identify test scenarios, assess test coverage, and highlight requirements or design gaps early in the delivery lifecycle.
  • Create and maintain high-quality test documentation including test plans, detailed test scenarios, test cases, traceability matrices, test evidence, execution reports, and release-quality summaries.
  • Perform database and backend validation using SQL to verify data integrity, transformations, transactional accuracy, and downstream processing results.
  • Validate APIs and service integrations using tools such as Postman and support automation of repeatable API and backend regression scenarios.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute automated tests using appropriate UI, API, or backend automation frameworks; contribute to improving regression efficiency and coverage.
  • Perform defect analysis and triage, provide clear reproduction details and supporting evidence, and collaborate with engineering teams through resolution and retesting.
  • Validate file-based workflows, scheduled jobs, and inter-system data exchanges, including reconciliation of source and target results.
  • Estimate testing effort, plan test execution, identify delivery risks, and communicate testing status and quality concerns to project and QA leads.
  • Mentor less experienced QA engineers on functional testing practices, test design, documentation quality, defect reporting, and effective validation techniques.
  • Contribute to QA process improvements, reusable test assets, automation candidates, and continuous improvement initiatives across the team.

What do I need to succeed?

Must Have:

  • 8+ years of software QA experience, with strong hands-on functional/manual testing expertise and meaningful experience with test automation.
  • Hands-on experience testing batch processing systems, including scheduled jobs, batch files, job dependencies, restart/recovery scenarios, and batch reconciliation.
  • Experience with event-driven and data-intensive systems, including exposure to Kafka message flows, topics and payload validation, as well as ETL testing, data pipelines, source-to-target validation, transformation rules, and data reconciliation.
  • Strong automation experience using tools and frameworks such as Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Rest Assured, Java, Python, or equivalent technologies.
  • Experience with modern delivery environments, including CI/CD pipelines, Git, Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, and exposure to cloud-native or microservices architectures, Azure, and Kubernetes.
  • Exposure to AI-assisted QA, including GenAI testing tools, AI-based test design or automation, or practical use of AI to improve testing efficiency and coverage.
  • Banking or financial services experience, with a solid understanding of the complexities and quality requirements of enterprise applications.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Proven ability to independently own testing for complex releases or functional areas, identify gaps and risks, and ensure quality throughout the delivery lifecycle.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to challenge assumptions constructively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document test results, communicate defects, and articulate quality risks.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and deliver effectively in a fast-paced Agile environment, with a strong collaborative mindset and sense of ownership for product quality.

Nice to Have:

  • Hands-on experience testing batch processing systems, scheduled jobs, batch files, job dependencies, restart/recovery scenarios, and batch reconciliation.
  • Exposure to Kafka, including validation of producer/consumer message flows, topics, payloads, and event-driven integrations.
  • Exposure to ETL testing, data pipelines, source-to-target validation, transformation rules, and data reconciliation.
  • Experience with automation technologies such as Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Rest Assured, Java, Python, or equivalent frameworks.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git, Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, or similar delivery tooling.
  • Exposure to cloud-native or microservices-based environments, including Azure and Kubernetes.
  • Exposure to AI-assisted software testing, GenAI testing tools, AI-based test design or automation, or practical use of AI to improve QA productivity and coverage.
  • Banking or financial-services domain experience.
