A Functional Data Analyst is a professional who specializes in analyzing and interpreting data related to the functionality and performance of business processes or systems. They use statistical methods and data modeling to identify trends, patterns, and insights that help organizations improve efficiency and decision-making. Unlike traditional data analysts, functional data analysts focus specifically on data that reflects the operational aspects of a business, often working closely with stakeholders to translate business needs into actionable data solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional data analyst?

To thrive as a Functional Data Analyst, you need strong analytical abilities, a solid understanding of data modeling, and a background in statistics or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with data analytics tools (such as SQL, Excel, Tableau, or Python) and experience with business intelligence systems are typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving, and the ability to translate technical findings into actionable business insights are standout soft skills. These competencies enable analysts to extract meaningful information from data, support decision-making, and drive organizational success.

How does a functional data analyst typically collaborate with business stakeholders to ensure data-driven decision making?

A Functional Data Analyst often works closely with business stakeholders to understand their objectives, translate requirements into analytical tasks, and present actionable insights. Job description

In the Worldwide Returns & ReCommerce (WWRR) group at Amazon, we are dedicated to 'making zero happen' - zero cost of returns, zero waste, and zero defects - to benefit our customers, company, and environment. We are an agile and inclusive organization that constantly innovates to create long-term value by investing in our people and our planet, not simply focusing on the bottom line.
WWRR includes business, product, operations, data, and software engineering teams, who together manage the lifecycle of returned and damaged products. In WWRR, you will partner across these teams to help customers discover great deals on quality used, rentals, and open box items; get the most value out of Amazon's products; improve the customer returns experience; and reduce defects, waste, and cost in reverse logistics processes

You will be a leader, a builder, and an owner, collaborating cross-functionally with technical, operations, and business teams to design scalable and automated solutions to customer problems.
Amazon is Earth's most customer-centric company and in WWRR, the Earth is our customer too. Come join us and innovate with the Amazon Worldwide Returns & ReCommerce team!
As a Data Analyst, you will be responsible for analyzing complex operational problems, discovering insights and identifying opportunities through the use of business intelligence, data mining and visualization techniques. You will need to collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders and cross-functional teams to solve problems, create operational efficiencies, and deliver successfully against high organizational standards

You will own end-to-end program execution for initiatives within your focus area, using data to measure effectiveness and inform iteration. You will apply a breadth of tools, data sources and analytical techniques to answer a wide range of high-impact business questions and present the insights in a concise and effective manner. Additionally, you should be an effective communicator capable of independently driving issues to resolution and communicating insights to non-technical audiences.

This is a high impact role with goals that directly impact the bottom line of the business.
Key job responsibilities
* Use analytics and data mining techniques to solve complex problems and drive business decisions.
* Employ the appropriate tools and methodologies to discover patterns of risks, abuse, and help reduce bad debt
* Analyze customer behavioral patterns and develop policy change recommendations based on findings
* Solve analytical problems and effectively communicate methodologies and results
* Build analyses for product launches and provide launch recommendations
* Create dashboards and visualizations to surface trends, anomalies, and actionable insights from large datasets
* Work closely with business, engineering, and partner teams to align on priorities and deliver against your focus area.
