Job description

Visit Fort Worth is hiring a full-time Drover position with the Herd department. This is a 32 hour per week position with benefits.

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.


SUMMARY OF BASIC FUNCTIONS:

To perform duties directly related to the care of livestock, to operate and maintain equipment; and to interact with tourism activities.

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of horse management as well as the ability to effectively ride a horse in a safe manner is required. Candidate must be able to handle cattle from foot and horseback.

Essential Functions:

  1. Drive cattle and interact with tourists daily.
  2. Participate in scheduled preventative maintenance of all areas and equipment used by the Herd within authorized areas of operations set by management.
  3. Responsible for exercising horses daily.
  4. Check horses and cattle for health daily and doctor as needed, under supervision of the Trail Boss or Assistant Trail Boss.
  5. Feed, water and clean horse stalls and longhorn pens daily.
  6. Maintain tack and equipment, livestock, and facility areas to insure upkeep, cleanliness and functionality.
  7. Provide staff assistance to co-workers, supervisory and management staff; prepare and present equipment maintenance reports and other necessary correspondence.
  8. Operate tractor/loader truck, and trailer on a daily/weekly basis as needed.
  9. Interact with tourists, the general public and business owners; Stockyards Business Association and other associate groups for special events.
  10. Record daily livestock condition, supply inventory and issues that need attention to report to supervisor as required

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Two (2) years of responsible experience in livestock handling
  • Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques commonly used in livestock handling.
  • Riding and exercising horses as needed and daily.
  • Knowledge of horse care, terms, and horse handling
  • Load/unload horse in trailer, mount, and dismount, have balanced seat and correct hand position
  • Tourism related activities are a plus.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

  • Equivalent of high school diploma or GED
  • Possession of valid Texas driver's license Class C or equipment and acceptable driving record.
  • Knowledge of Facility Cleaning and Maintenance
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions regarding livestock handling.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: This position has no direct reports.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions:

Indoor and outdoor environments; exposure to inclement weather conditions; exposure to chemicals, toxic materials;

Physical Conditions:

  • Standing: 6 hours maximum per day
  • Pulling: Ability to pull 50 pounds as needed with dolly.
  • Bending/ stooping/ kneeling / walking / climbing
  • Lifting: Employee must be able to lift and carry at least 60 pounds multiple times each day.

Friday through Monday 7:45 am - 4:45 pm
