Job description

Department Overview

The custodial position is part of a highly productive, flexible team capable of collaborating with other work units to provide our customers with an outstanding environment in which to work.

The Custodian will provide cleaning services, and other duties as assigned to the university. Individuals in this position may perform work independently through assignments and demonstrate efficient use of time by following written and verbal direction including other means to achieve department goals. The custodian must have attention to detail, a passion for cleaning and the ability to maintain a positive rapport with customers. OHSU is committed to sustainable practices; the custodian will perform green cleaning practices and provide feedback to analyze effectiveness.

Function/Duties of Position

General Custodial

Provide a clean environment for staff, visitors and patients.

  • Carpet vacuuming/edging.
  • Dusting all surfaces.
  • Dust mopping, wet mopping, sweeping.
  • Remove litter.
  • Cleaning glass - Doors and windows.
  • Wash walls, doorframes, window ledges.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, locker rooms.
  • Clean break areas and kitchens.
  • Refill dispensers, carts, shelves with needed supplies.
  • Remove waste and cleans containers. Transport to central location.
  • Dust blinds.
  • Operate all cleaning and floor care equipment, buffers, wet vacuums, auto scrubbers, upright vacuums, and carpet extractors.

Recycling

Provide recycling services to OHSU community.  

  • Placement and collection of recycling containers throughout interior and exterior of buildings.
  • Accurately and safely sort recyclables into appropriate containers.  Maintain cleanliness of sorting area.
  • Safely shred and bale recycled items.
  • Following HIPAA regulations.

Litter Patrol

Provide an exterior environment free of trash and debris.

  • Patrolling for and removal of litter from grounds, exterior stairwells, entrances, and patios.
  • Removal of waste from exterior trash cans and transport to central location.
  • Cleaning of exterior trash cans and reporting disrepair.
  • Placement and servicing of additional trash cans for events.

Other Duties

Provide support to other work units. 

  • Assist in exterior cleanup activities including graffiti removal, minor debris removal projects.
  • Sweep or shovel snow from steps and walks at building entrances and connecting walks.
  • Perform minor building maintenance under supervision as needed.
  • Report security issues to the Department of Public Safety.
  • Perform duties according to the safety guidelines as determined by OSHA and the OHSU Custodial Services department.
Required Qualifications
  • Related job experience demonstrating work ethic and teamwork.
  • General cleaning knowledge.

  • Basic computer skills: Ability to run a computer, navigate the OS interface and use Microsoft Outlook.

  • Working knowledge of and ability to speak, understand, read and write basic English.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High School or GED or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years of custodial experience.
  • Commercial cleaning background.

  • Knowledge and experience of floor care practices.
  • Current Driver's license and driving record that meets OHSU's driving requirements.
Additional Details

Working Conditions

  • Assignments are primarily indoors, but also involve some outdoor work.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work cooperatively with customers and team members.
  • Working locations may be on Marquam Hill or at select off campus sites and include academic and research facilities and small clinic areas.
  • Assignments will involve the cleaning of laboratory spaces, restrooms, classrooms, kitchens, cafeterias/break rooms, hallways, warehouse spaces, lobbies and other similar spaces. Some assignments may also involve the cleaning of clinic spaces, areas where cadavers are present, or animal care areas.
  • Assignments have exposure risks to biohazardous material and will involve work in the presence of laboratory chemicals, human or animal tissues/fluids and experimental agents.
  • Working conditions involve noise and slippery surfaces.

Physical Conditions

  • Requires a high level of physical activity. 
  • Must be reasonably strong and agile, able to bend, stoop, climb, walk and do lifting up to 50 lbs, including lifting overhead. 
  • Must be able to push carts weighing up to 1000 pounds with a maximum sustained push and/or pull force of 75 pounds. 
  • Must be able to work at a rapid pace. 
  • A great deal of the day is spent on your feet. 
  • Must be able to operate upright and backpack style vacuum cleaners, carpet extractors, balers, compactors, pallet jacks, pressure washers and floor care equipment safely.
