Description
SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Water Resources Supervisor/Manager and other hydrogeologists and hydrologists, conducts office and field activities necessary to the collection, collation, and input of water resources data. Maintenance of groundwater monitoring equipment and general support of hydrological investigations.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Collect water samples from:
    • Municipal and irrigation water supply wells, and piezometers; and
    • Surface water bodies (e.g., rivers, streams, lakes)
  • Perform:
    • Measurements of water levels in municipal and irrigation water supply wells, and piezometers using steel or soft tapes, acoustic sounders, air lines, or pressure transducers;
    • Stream gauging at various discharges;
    • Installation, downloading, and maintenance of pressure transducers in municipal and irrigation wells and piezometers;
  • Use GPS to locate wells and/or water sampling locations; enter agricultural and remote natural terrain to obtain data;
  • Data recordation including, for example:
    • Record field determinations of surface and groundwater chemical parameters;
    • Record water level measurements;
    • Prepare records for computer processing and enter data into computer files;
    • Assemble and prepare field and laboratory data for tabulation; and
    • Maintain written field logs and equipment maintenance logs.
  • Equipment maintenance:
    • Service, maintain, transport, test, and repair field equipment (e.g., compressors, generators, sampling pumps);
    • Constructs, assembles, installs, adjusts, operates, modifies and repairs field equipment or wellhead appurtenances;
    • Maintains field equipment supply inventories; and
    • Ensures field vehicle maintenance is performed, as required.
  • Assist others with field projects (e.g., surface geophysical surveys, production well and piezometer installation/borehole logging);
  • Coordinate field activities regarding:
    • Land access with property owners;
    • Establish routes to various off-site locations to perform job functions

Typical Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE OF
  • Water quality analysis;
  • Database operations;

ABILITY TO
  • Use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint with competency and comfortably import and format data;
  • Make small-scale equipment repairs;
  • Operate, maintain, and repair mechanical and electronic instruments and equipment using, for example, volt and ohm meters, soldering irons, wattmeter's, power and hand tools, data loggers, computers/tablets, calculators, and various vehicles;
  • Use basic hand and power tools including, for example, saws, jack hammer, welder, cutting torch, etc. to perform equipment repairs and/or maintenance or to repair or install wellheads;
  • Effectively communicate information in writing and verbally;
  • Professionally and knowledgably interact with the public encountered in the field;
  • Work independently and in small groups; stay on task with minimal supervision;
  • Good driving record and navigation skills;
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; and
  • Speak and understand Spanish is desirable but not required.
  • Follow written and oral instructions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); with two years of college courses with an emphasis in chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, or water technology; or equivalent experience and/or training in water resources.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession and maintenance of a valid California driver's license is required throughout the term of employment.
