Job description

Bering-Alaka`ina Holdings, LLC is looking for an Animal Husbandry Technician II to support our government customer at the US Army Institute for Surgical Research (USAISR), JBSA Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform animal husbandry duties for both small and large animals, which includes but is not limited to rats, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, swine, sheep, and goats. These tasks are considered essential services and must be completed daily to ensure good animal health and sanitation protocols. The Animal Husbandry Technician II shall also prepare orders for animal supplies and equipment.
  • Prepare and change and/or clean animal cages and related cage accessories, feeding and manual watering or monitoring automatic watering devices.
  • Follow approved room-order entry procedures and husbandry related duties in Animal Biosafety Level (ABSL) II animal holding and procedure rooms.
  • Operate cage wash equipment in accordance with internal SOPs.
  • Prepare caging, transport containers/carts, and related equipment for cage washing including scraping floor grids, breaking down caging, and dumping pans or scraping cages.
  • Perform animal census as reported on internal USAISR Animal Census Form to include the ABSL II (animal rooms).
  • Perform animal health observations and report any abnormal conditions or behavior of animals immediately to the Veterinarian, Vivarium Manager, Assistant Vivarium Manager and/or Surgery Manager (reported email).
  • Complete husbandry related logbooks, checklists and other records accurately and in a timely fashion (as prescribed in SOPs).
  • Animal enrichment assists in enticing animals to navigate their habitats in new ways and perform a range of natural behaviors, including social behaviors, different sorts of locomotion, exploration, hiding, and foraging. Enrichment has been shown to assist in lowering the stressors of limited interactions and caged living.
  • Perform animal care and environmental enrichment activities as prescribed in local SOPs. These activities include preparing food, toys, mirrors, rubber balls, and other items. The Animal Husbandry Technician II shall also prepare orders for animal supplies and equipment.
  • Prepare and distribute produce, enrichment feed, and environmental enrichment devices according to established SOPs:
    • Track animal, feed, enrichment, and/or supplies to properly account for spoilage and wastage.
    • Conduct weekly inventory on all enrichment items/feed and submits report Vivarium Manager.
  • Provide environmental enrichment feed and other enrichment devices.
  • Document husbandry procedures and enrichment distribution.

DESIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Bachelor's degree is preferred
  • The following certifications are preferred:
    • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT)
    • Laboratory Animal Laboratory Technician (LAT)

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • At least two to four (2-4) years' laboratory experience is desired
  • Experience providing animal husbandry technical support in a DoD environment is preferred

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must be able to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI)
