We are hiring immediately for a full-time Vehicle Service Technician who is reliable, safety-focused, and takes pride in hands-on work. If you enjoy solving mechanical problems and want a career that supports your community, we'd love to have you join our team!


What the Vehicle Service Technician Does

The ATA Bus Service Technician performs regularly scheduled preventative maintenance and repairs on a fleet of 30+ medium-duty transit buses serving Manhattan, Kansas State University, and Junction City.


Responsibilities include:

  • Routine preventative maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, inspections)
  • Brake, steering, suspension, and fluid system checks
  • Replacing tires, brake pads/rotors, shocks, wiper blades, and light bulbs
  • Diagnosing mechanical and intermittent electrical issues as needed
  • Maintaining auxiliary equipment such as bike racks, cameras, fare systems, and wheelchair lifts
  • Communicating with drivers and dispatch regarding vehicle status and maintenance schedules
  • Maintaining repair and maintenance records in an automated system

Approximately 70% of the role is scheduled maintenance, with 30% focused on troubleshooting and repairs.


Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • High School/GED diploma
  • 1-2 years of lube tech or entry-level technician experience with light, medium, or heavy-duty vehicle maintenance
    or completion of (or recent graduation from) a 2-year automotive program
  • Must be able to obtain an ASE G1 and EPA 609 A/C certification within 12 months of employment
  • Must have a clean, valid Driver's License
  • Must be able to obtain a CDL Class C with Passenger Endorsement within the first 90 days (training provided if needed)
  • Regular attendance and performance of duties as assigned are required
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Must be able to pass background screening, motor vehicle screening, drug screening, DOT physical, and physical capacity testing
  • Basic computer skills and experience using technology are required
  • Travel requirement: <5% for occasional parts pickup or off-site vehicle transport


Pay, Schedule, and Benefits

Pay Range: $18.00 - $24.00/hour

Work Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday

  • Shift may be evaluated after 90 days
  • Occasional overtime or weekend work may be required

Additional Information:

This position requires regular communication and the ability to safely work in an active maintenance environment. The Service Technician role is physically demanding and involves standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the day. Employees must be able to lift and move items weighing 50 pounds or more as part of normal job duties.


Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus while working with vehicle components and equipment.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, and automotive fluids. Work may occur in both indoor and outdoor conditions, including occasional temperature extremes. The noise level in the maintenance environment can be loud at times.


This is a safety-sensitive position, and employees in this role are subject to drug and alcohol testing, including pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident screenings, in accordance with company policy and applicable regulations.
