Job description

If you're a critical thinker with strong writing and editing skills this may be the internship for you. We're hiring for positions during September-December (Fall). This internship is 40 hours a week for the four-month period. It includes medical benefits. You'll work at the Church Office Building in Salt Lake City, Utah with the possibility of some days working at home.

Church employees find joy and satisfaction in using their unique talents and abilities to further the Lord's work. From the IT professional who develops an app that sends the gospel message worldwide, to the facilities manager who maintains our buildings- giving Church members places to worship, teach, learn, and receive sacred ordinances-our employees seek innovative ways to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the world. They are literally working in His kingdom.
Only members of the Church who are worthy of a temple recommend qualify for employment. Apart from this, the Church is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate in its employment decisions on any basis that would violate U.S. or local law.
Qualified applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, national origin, color, gender, pregnancy, marital status, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, or other legally protected categories that apply to the Church. The Church will make reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with known disabilities.

Applicants working toward an editing minor or major or taking classes with an editing/writing emphasis, or those who have print or digital journalism experience, are preferred.

Applicants must:
Be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited college or university.
Or recently completed a degree from an accredited college or university within one year of beginning this internship.
Be available for video conference interviews.
Core qualifications include:
At least one semester of college-level editing or writing experience, such as on a newspaper staff, for a literary journal, in a writing lab, or as a professor's assistant.
Strong writing, revising, copyediting, and proofreading skills.
Sound understanding of Church doctrine, history, organization, and policy.
The ability to manage many projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
The ability to give careful attention to detail, sustain concentration for long periods of time, and maintain the highest level of accuracy.
The ability to work well with people and present an image of professionalism.

To apply, please submit:
1.    A cover letter
2.    A resume that includes a link to your digital portfolio
3.    Digital portfolios should include editing and writing samples

  • Writing samples should highlight your ability to write for specific audiences. You might consider writing a new article on a gospel topic that could be published in Liahona.
  • A 40-word teaser that invites readers to follow a link to explore an article (any article, such as a longer article found in this month's Liahona).
  • Editing samples should clearly show your edits (so make sure track changes are on or, if it's a scan of a hard copy, that your editing marks are legible).
Writing and substantive editing skills will be assessed using your portfolio. You may be required to take a test.

As Liahona intern, you'll work with staff to plan and develop magazine content for readers worldwide. You'll be writing, editing, interviewing, researching, proofreading, and evaluating manuscripts, but duties may depend on your strengths and goals and our needs at the magazine. The magazine is published in 50 languages but is produced first in English, so foreign language skills are not required. But international experience is helpful.
