What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time stylist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Stylist, you typically need expertise in hair cutting, coloring, and styling techniques, supported by a cosmetology license or relevant certification. Familiarity with salon management software, point-of-sale systems, and professional styling tools is essential. Outstanding communication, creativity, and customer service skills help you build strong client relationships and deliver personalized experiences. These abilities ensure high client satisfaction, repeat business, and a positive reputation in a competitive industry.

What is a full time stylist?

Full time stylists are professionals who provide fashion, hair, or personal styling services to clients on a regular, typically 40-hour per week schedule. They work in salons, retail stores, fashion houses, or as personal consultants, helping clients choose outfits, create looks, or maintain their hair and appearance. Full time stylists often keep up with the latest trends, offer personalized advice, and build lasting relationships with their clients to enhance their overall style.

What is the difference between Full Time Stylist vs Part Time Stylist?

AspectFull Time StylistPart Time Stylist
Work HoursTypically 35-40 hours per weekFewer hours, usually less than 20 hours per week
CredentialsCosmetology license, experience preferredSame as Full Time Stylist, often with less experience required
Work EnvironmentSalon or spa, full-time scheduleSame environment, flexible scheduling
CompensationSalary or hourly plus tips, benefits often includedHourly pay, tips, fewer or no benefits

Full Time Stylists work longer hours with more consistent schedules and benefits, while Part Time Stylists have flexible hours with fewer benefits. Both roles require cosmetology credentials and work in similar salon environments, but differ mainly in hours and compensation structure.

What are the typical challenges a full time stylist faces when managing multiple clients in a busy salon environment?

A Full Time Stylist often needs to balance appointments, walk-ins, and client consultations, especially during peak hours. Managing time efficiently while maintaining high-quality service can be challenging, as each client may have unique requirements and expectations. Stylists must also stay updated on the latest trends and techniques, and work collaboratively with other team members, such as colorists and receptionists, to ensure a seamless client experience. Adapting to different personalities and building long-term client relationships are key aspects that contribute to success in this role.

Is it hard to get a job as a full time stylist?

Securing a full-time stylist position can be competitive and often depends on experience, skills, and location. Building a strong portfolio, obtaining relevant certifications, and networking can improve chances of employment in this field.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
