Full Time Structural Dynamics Engineer information

What does a full time structural dynamics engineer do?

A Full Time Structural Dynamics Engineer analyzes and evaluates how structures respond to dynamic forces such as vibrations, impacts, and environmental loads. Their work involves using mathematical models, simulations, and physical testing to ensure that structures like buildings, bridges, aircraft, or machinery can withstand various dynamic conditions without failing. They collaborate with other engineers to optimize designs for safety, reliability, and efficiency. This role is essential in industries like aerospace, civil engineering, and automotive manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time structural dynamics engineer?

To thrive as a Full Time Structural Dynamics Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, expertise in structural analysis, and typically a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Proficiency with finite element analysis (FEA) software such as ANSYS or NASTRAN, as well as familiarity with MATLAB and CAD systems, is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and present complex technical information. These skills ensure accurate structural assessments, innovative designs, and safe, efficient engineering solutions.

What are some common challenges a structural dynamics engineer faces when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural Dynamics Engineers often collaborate with professionals from aerospace, mechanical, and civil engineering fields, which can present challenges in aligning requirements and ensuring seamless communication. Balancing the dynamic performance needs with constraints like weight, cost, and manufacturability requires strong problem-solving skills. Additionally, interpreting and integrating test data with simulation results to validate designs is a frequent responsibility that demands both technical expertise and attention to detail.

  • Develop cost/benefit studies and design justification for structural component sizing and selection on company product platforms.

  • Inspect work on the manufacturing floor to confirm conformance with approved structural designs.

  • Provide leadership within a multidisciplinary engineering and manufacturing environment while supporting continuous technical improvement.

  • Apply knowledge of structural and safety codes to help ensure designs align with accepted engineering practices.

How You Will Do It

  • Own your work with accountability, safety, and integrity, especially when designs affect people, equipment, and production flow.

  • Stay close to the shop floor and the production process so solutions are practical, buildable, and aligned with customer needs.

  • Use clear analysis, sound judgment, and direct communication to remove obstacles quickly and keep projects moving.

  • Improve every day by applying technical curiosity, asking candid questions, and using problem-solving to strengthen future designs.

  • Work as one team with production, safety, manufacturing, and other engineering disciplines to deliver reliable outcomes.

  • Use structural engineering software, calculation packages, and fabrication inputs to validate designs and support engineering decisions.

  • Balance code compliance, manufacturability, and cost efficiency to produce lean and effective structural solutions.

  • Maintain organized documentation and follow-through so approvals, inspections, and handoffs are accurate and timely.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.

  • 10+ years of experience in structural engineering with experience in steel design.

  • Professional Engineering (P.Eng) license is required.

  • Ability to produce lean, efficient, and easily constructable designs that support cost reduction goals.
