Job SummaryMedical Technician (Phlebotomist) - Contract Support

Facility: VA Bedford Healthcare System (Office of Veteran Affairs Medical Center at VA Bedford)

Positions Requested: Two (2) Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) Medical Technicians (Phlebotomists)

Work Location: Onsite (VA Bedford)

Compensation: 27.00/hr plus 5.09 for Health

Current requirement: Two (2) FTE working 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM (with the ability to flex to other day shifts listed above as needed).

Additional Scheduling Requirements
  • The employee may be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime.

  • On-call or standby duties will NOT be required.

Position Summary

The VA Bedford Medical Center currently has a shortage of Medical Technicians (Phlebotomists). The Contractor will furnish two (2) FTE Phlebotomists to provide onsite phlebotomy and specimen processing services to eligible VA beneficiaries.

Services will be delivered in alignment with laboratory services typical of a state-of-the-art civilian medical treatment facility. The standard of care must meet or exceed nationally recognized standards, including Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines.

Primary ResponsibilitiesKey Responsibilities:

Contractor personnel may work in multiple laboratory areas depending on service needs and will be responsible for the following:

Phlebotomy & Collection
  • Perform patient phlebotomy for:

    • Inpatient ward rounds

    • Inpatient and outpatient collections

    • Emergency Department (ED) collections

    • STAT, ASAP, and timed draws

Specimen Processing
  • Perform specimen processing, including send-out preparation.

Patient Identification & Safety
  • Positively identify patients prior to specimen collection.

  • Positively identify samples prior to testing and/or aliquoting.

Privacy & Information Security
  • Safeguard electronic and paper patient information in accordance with VA and applicable privacy/security requirements.

Problem Resolution
  • Identify, document, and resolve collection and/or processing issues.

Customer Service / Professional Conduct
  • Provide patient-centered care.

  • Deliver service professionally to avoid complaints from stakeholders, customers, and patients.

Minimum QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
  • Experience: Must have three (3) years of recent phlebotomy experience.

  • Language: Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently.

  • Technical Proficiency: Must be technically proficient in the skills required to fulfill the government's requirements.

  • Competency Documentation: Must be able to provide documentation upon request (to the CO/COR) verifying current and ongoing competency, skills, and any required certification and/or licensure related to services performed.
