Job description

PURPOSE: The Copy Editor writes, edits, and proofreads communication materials for Calvary Church. The duties include but are not limited to: developing copy to support teaching series, special services and events, ministry-specific classes, serving opportunities, and multimedia ministry efforts; editing and proofreading weekly worship bulletins, sermon outlines and summaries, email devotionals, churchwide emails, and in-service and website promotions; editing and proofreading copy to support resources for multimedia ministry consumers and donors; maintaining language standards including voice, tone, and style.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
  • Write, edit, and proofread various items for communication in print, radio, video,
    websites, and social media
  • Write, edit, and proofread various items for Connect with Skip Heitzig products (CDs, DVDs, booklets)
  • Concept and write scripts for creative videos to engage congregation with teaching series, specific ministries, and community outreaches
  • Edit and proofread all bulletins and sermon outlines for Calvary Church campuses
  • Write, edit, and proofread content for emails and text messages to congregation, Life Team (ministry servants), and ministry supporters
  • Write, edit, and proofread social media captions and text for paid social media as needed
  • Write message summaries and detailed notes for senior pastor's messages

ESSENTIAL TASKS:
  • Weekly: Edit and proof worship bulletins; proof sermon outline and message summary
  • Weekly: Write video announcements for video department and lower thirds/on-screen text for production department
  • Weekly: Write churchwide email
  • Weekly: Edit and proof preservice slides and website promotional events
  • Monthly: Proof email text for Connect with Skip Heitzig
  • Monthly: Edit and proof monthly resource text for Connect with Skip Heitzig

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor's degree in English or Journalism or a minimum of 5 years of experience, or a combination of equivalent education/experience
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Flexibility to work autonomously, in a team, across departments, and under the direction of a supervisor
  • A personal relationship with Christ and a heart to communicate the gospel
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Teams
  • Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style preferred
