As a Sr Software Engineer on the Consumer Engineering - Rewards team at Optum Technology, you will contribute directly to the core UHC Rewards Platform. You will be responsible for ensuring technical correctness, system availability, and an outstanding user experience across web and mobile platforms. In this role, you will design and develop scalable distributed systems using Java, Spring Boot, SQL databases, and AWS, while leveraging enterprise-approved tools to streamline engineering workflows and drive operational efficiency.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and maintain high-performance, scalable distributed systems for the UHC Rewards core platform across web and mobile platforms
  • Develop backend microservices and cloud-native architectures using Java, Spring Boot, and AWS services
  • Design, optimize, and maintain SQL databases ensuring transactional correctness, query efficiency, and data integrity
  • Implement robust software testing patterns and frameworks to guarantee platform reliability, performance, and continuous integration
  • Use enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline workflows, automate tasks, and drive continuous improvement
  • Evaluate emerging trends to inform solution design and strategic innovation
  • Participate in technical design sessions, enforce architectural standards, conduct code reviews, and mentor team members

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree with 3 years of software engineering experience, OR Bachelor's degree with 6 years of software engineering experience
  • 5 years of software development experience using Java and Spring Boot
  • 4 years of experience working with SQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle) including transactions and query optimization
  • 3 years of hands-on experience building, deploying, and maintaining applications in AWS
  • 3 years of experience with distributed systems architecture and microservices design
  • 3 years of experience implementing testing patterns, automated testing frameworks, and CI/CD practices

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Experience supporting web and mobile core platform integrations
  • Experience utilizing enterprise-approved AI developer tools to optimize coding efficiency, test automation, and software delivery
  • Experience in consumer rewards, health engagement, or healthcare technology platforms
  • Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $91,700 - $163,700 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
