Position Description
With more than 200 attorneys and professional staff, the Seattle City Attorney's Office is one of the largest law offices in Seattle and is the third-largest public law office in the state. The Criminal Division of the Seattle City Attorney's Office represents the City in prosecuting misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, and traffic infractions in Seattle Municipal Court. The types of cases prosecuted by the Criminal Division include driving under the influence, misdemeanor domestic violence, theft, assault, property damage, and trespassing.
The Case Preparation Unit is responsible for providing administrative support to Assistant City Prosecutors by routing police reports for review, generating criminal charging documents for filing with Seattle Municipal Court, assisting with court calendar preparation, researching and collecting data from government databases, and providing administrative support during all stages of prosecution.
Job Responsibilities
  • Using the City Attorney's Office case management system, JusticeNexus, create charging and other case-related documents for filing with Seattle Municipal Court
  • Coordinate hearing information, track case activity, and account for all case files and required documents
  • Accurately research city, state, and federal criminal histories by utilizing several criminal justice databases while maintaining individual database certifications
  • Assist in assigning new police reports to prosecutors
  • Prepare case files for court hearings, to include running new criminal histories and verifying that all correct documentation exists
  • Enter, verify, and update existing case data in JusticeNexus
  • Generate and run JusticeNexus reports for specific work assignments
  • Gather, sort, distribute, and retrieve materials to/from King County Jail, Seattle Police Department, and Seattle Municipal Court
  • Operate and troubleshoot office equipment such as copiers and printers
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two years of post-secondary course work in legal secretarial or business skills and one year of litigation support work demonstrating familiarity with legal forms, terminology and documents (or a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides evidence of the ability to perform the work of the class).

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The successful candidate will be required to work a shift starting as early as 6:00 am and be willing to work on Saturdays and potentially some holidays. (Note: Being scheduled for Saturdays will allow an additional weekday off.)

Compensation - The full pay range for this step-progression position is $34.92 - $39.18 per hour. New employees begin at Step One of the pay progression, at $34.92 per hour. Current City employees' starting pay rate will be based on the Personnel Rules regarding promotions. Advanced initial step placement may be considered under limited circumstances, but step salaries are not subject to negotiation.
