The University of Arizona School of Music invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Practice, career track, not tenure eligible, twelve month with specialization in Sound Recording to serve as the Director of the Recording Studio, operate and maintain the Jeffrey Haskell Recording Studio, work with faculty, staff, and students in the creation of professional recordings, teach current and future courses in coursework in recording technologies, and teach/mentor student interns.
The University of Arizona is a Research I institution. The successful candidate will work with colleagues to assess and develop innovative curriculum at all levels, from general education survey courses to graduate seminars in these areas of expertise. Faculty teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate majors as well as other majors and serve on graduate committees. The Jeffrey Haskell Recording Studio is core to the mission of the School of Music and in the scholarship and creative activity of the school's faculty and students. The successful candidate's position will include the administration and recording process associated with the Recording Studio as a key part of this faculty position.
The School of Music is one of the country's top comprehensive music programs, home to innovative faculty members who are leaders in their fields as educators, scholars, and active performers. The faculty include approximately 60 specialists across performance, music education, jazz studies, composition, conducting, music theory, musicology, and ethnomusicology, who provide rigorous training to over 300 undergraduate and 150 master's and doctoral music majors. . Duties & Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain the Jeffrey Haskell recording studio.
  • Work with students, faculty and staff to create professional recordings.
  • Keep up to date on emerging technologies.
  • Make minor repairs.
  • Lecturer for existing and new course work.
  • Improve and maintain studio web site.
  • Mentor students as interns.
  • Produce high quality media.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Ability to interact with a wide range of students, faculty, etc.; people skills
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to learn new equipment and software
  • Ability to provide mentorship in audio and video
  • Proficiency in video recording and editing.
  • Proficiency in Digital Workstations including but not limited to:
    - Pro Tools
    - Logic Pro
    - Reaper
    - DaVinci Resolve (or equivalent)

Minimum Qualifications
  • Degree in relevant field or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of five years professional experience as a recording engineer.
  • Minimum of five years in higher education mentoring and instructing students and interns.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in video (2D and immersive) recording, editing, authoring and dissemination.
  • Mentorship in audio and video.
  • Experience with troubleshooting complex equipment.
  • Flexibility to adapt and learn new equipment and software.
