Job description

Auto Warehousing (AWC) has been family-owned and operated for more than 50 years and is North America's leader in finished vehicle logistics. Our Vancouver location is looking to hire 1 Full-Time Rail Loader. For this position, you MUST be able to work outside 100% of the time, have a valid Driver's License, and be able to drive a Manual Transmission (stick shift) Vehicle. We are located in Portland, OR. This is a very physically demanding position that requires you to work in tight spaces, climb ladders, and lift bridge plates. This will primarily be a Monday-Friday position with the shift of 7:00am-3:30 pm however due to the vessel schedule - some weekend work may be required.

Summary of Position:

Obtain, inspect, transport, load, and unload vehicles onto rail cars in a safe and efficient manner. This is a general overview of the position, not an all-inclusive list of activities.

Essential Functions, Duties & Tasks:

  • Prepare rail car for loading
    • Open/Close rail car doors
    • Raise and lower rail car decks
    • Operate loading ramp and position correctly for safe vehicle entry
    • Properly set rail car bridge plates in place
  • Shuttle vehicles onto the rail cars
    • Check vehicles for damage
    • Report damage or miss bays to lead, supervisor, or manager
    • Drive customer vehicles onto rail cars from staging lines in a safe and efficient manner
  • Secure vehicles in the rail cars
    • Apply chains or chocks, as required by manufacturers, to ensure the vehicle is secure
    • Walk the deck to verify vehicles are properly loaded and secured
  • Various duties as assigned or required to help the facility function in a team environment
    • Adhere to all AWC and AAR safety standards
    • Train new employees and temporary workers

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Able to follow directions, both written and verbal
  • Able to adhere to strict quality standards without variance
  • Good visual ability
  • Knowledge of the use of hand tools (i.e., wrenches, screwdrivers, ratchets, etc.)
  • Must have a good sense of balance
  • Able to work at a height approximately 15 feet above the ground
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds overhead
  • Able to push, pull, or carry up to 85 pounds
  • Able to pass Safe Driving, Rail, and Buck Ramp quizzes with 80% accuracy or better
  • Able to stand, walk, and work outdoors in all weather conditions

Education, Experience & Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license; good driving record
  • 6 months work experience

Preferred Requirements:

  • ​Experience working in a team environment
