The Idaho Geological Survey is seeking a GIS Specialist to join a multidisciplinary team supporting geologic mapping and geospatial data initiatives across Idaho. This position develops and manages geospatial databases, performs GIS analyses, creates and edits digital geologic maps, and supports the publication of geologic data products. Working with considerable independence, the successful candidate will apply GIS, cartographic, and database management expertise to advance state and federally funded projects, improve data accessibility and workflows, and help deliver geospatial information that supports scientific research, natural resource management, hazard assessment, and informed decision-making.
Position Overview
This position supports the Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) staff in research and grant-related responsibilities across programs in all Geographic Information System (GIS) needs including database creation and management, digital cartography and geologic mapping editing and layout. They will be responsible for interpreting spatial data, conducting analyses, creating maps, and providing actionable insights. This position requires the ability to work independently and provides support and technical guidance to the Digital Mapping Manager and Survey staff on GIS-related matters.
Duties may include:
  • Develop and produce geodatabase and related non-spatial data for a variety of purposes Utilize GIS software to compile, analyze, and manipulate spatial data
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and reliability of GIS data and analyses
  • Ensure compliance of geodatabase with state and federal standards and mandates
  • Create scripts and programs to automate GIS processes and solutions
  • Maintain documentation of GIS processes, data sources, and methodologies
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications
Required Experience
  • Two years using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and spatial analysis techniques
  • Using industry standard GIS applications
  • Using vector graphics and desktop publishing software
  • Experience using scripting languages (e.g., Python) to support GIS workflows
  • Editing and writing business correspondence using proper grammar and punctuation as demonstrated in application materials
  • Using computer software and applications for word processing, developing spreadsheets, email and internet research
  • Managing several projects concurrently
  • Working in a customer service-oriented team environment to accomplish shared goals.

Required Education
  • Master's Degree in GIS, Geology, Earth and Environmental Sciences, or a related field; OR Bachelor's Degree and two additional years of progressively responsible GIS experience.

Required Other
  • Must be able to travel occasionally to support the IGS office in Boise and to state and national professional meetings.

Additional Preferred
  • Experience working with geological data
  • Previous experience working with a State or Federal Geological Survey.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain custom Python scripts that automate complex GIS workflows.
  • Experience with web GIS technologies and online geospatial data delivery platforms (e.g., ArcGIS Online, Web Maps, web services).
  • Three or more years of applied GIS work experience.
  • Proficient knowledge of geologic mapping principles and skills
  • Knowledge of QA/QC techniques to assess the quality, accuracy and content of spatial databases and GIS deliverable products and publications
  • Familiarity with USGS geologic mapping standards, GeMS schema, and NCGMP products
