Job description

Job Details

The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC) at Thomas Jefferson University is seeking a talented computational biologist to serve in our Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, and Research Informatics Shared Resource. The computational biologist will primarily be responsible for guiding experimental design for research studies requiring computational analysis as well as providing computational biology support for these studies. All areas of responsibility listed below are essential to the satisfactory performance of this position by applicants.

Job Description

  • Work with PIs/study teams to determine experimental needs required for downstream analysis
  • Analyze large-scale, high-throughput datasets including but not limited to: spatial transcriptomic, single-cell multimodal omics, RNASeq (bulk and single-cell), ChIP-Seq, Whole Exome/Genome Sequencing, etc.
  • Build automated analytics workflows and pipelines for bioinformatics analyses
  • Assist in preparation of reports, manuscripts, grants, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the iSCORE values of Jefferson.

  • Interacts with other members of the shared resource to align and standardize workflows
  • Review and maintain SOPs for bioinformatics core
  • Propose new policies and guidelines to reflect the growing needs of the SKCCC research community
  • Maintain and document project requests, analyses, and other metrics
  • Troubleshoot issues across projects, provide feedback and areas for improvement
  • Contribute to bioinformatics training efforts for the SKCCC community
  • Outstanding communication skills, ability to interact and impart information clearly to an audience with varying backgrounds
  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn new technologies when necessary
  • Ability to work independently to handle organize and prioritize multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously
  • Mentors new staff
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned

Education:

Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or closely related field or Bachelor's degree with more than 3 years experience in Bioinformatics-related field.

AND

Experience:

Experience with Linux environment

NGS expertise

Scripting experience in R, Python or similar

Ability to converse with investigators and/or delegated research staff to determine scope, requirements, deliverables and timing for projects

Excellent communication skills including the ability to communicate and interpret complex concepts to a wide variety of audiences
