Description
The City of Norcross is looking for a Full-time Police Officer. The purpose of this position is to protect life and property and enforce federal and state laws and local ordinances. Successful performance contributes to the safety and well-being of citizens and promotes the efficient and effective operation of the department. The incumbent in this position will handle routine, emergency, and/or complex situations within the police department. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: conducting preliminary and/or follow up investigations, and work independently in performing regularly assigned duties under the general orders of a Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain or Chief.
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Patrols an assigned zone to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations.
  • Responds to calls relayed by communications officers, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing persons searches, public service duties, stranded motorists, and others.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations into traffic accidents and other incidents, including, interviewing victims, complainants and witnesses, gathering information and evidence, and securing crime scenes.
  • Apprehends, arrests, and processes offenders, including juveniles.
  • Provides assistance and backup support to other officers as necessary.
  • Provides first aid and CPR to victims as necessary.
  • Assists motorists and provides traffic direction as needed for events such as parades, funerals, ball games, and school crossings.
  • Testifies in judicial proceedings; may provide security during court sessions.
  • Transports prisoners.
  • Completes required reports and forms, including accident and incident reports.
  • Inspects and maintains an assigned patrol car and uniform.
  • Serves criminal arrest warrants and issues citations for traffic and ordinance violations.
  • Assists with job of communications officer, as necessary.
  • Provides security for the City of Norcross Municipal Court when needed.
  • Provides security for Mayor and Council meetings when needed.

Typical Qualifications
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
  • High School diploma or GED and one to two years of experience. Associate's degree preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act.
  • Must hold or have the ability to obtain a Peace Officer's Standards and Training Act certification and have the ability to become GCIC certified.
  • This position may require: 24-hour on call assignment, overtime, or working weekends, holidays, 8-hour, 10-hour, 12-hour, and/or rotating shifts.
  • Proven ability to effectively and professionally response to crisis and other emergency situations.

The City of Norcross recognizes the importance of paid time off for relaxation and other personal reasons. Based on your years of service as a full-time employee, you accrue vacation and sick hours on a bi-weekly basis. Accrual rates are below:
Vacation Leave
  • Up to 5 years of service - 80 hours annually
  • 6 through 10 years of service - 120 hours annually
  • 11 through 15 years of service - 160 hours annually
  • 16 through 20 years of service - 200 hours annually
  • 21 years or more - 240 hours annually

Sick Leave
  • All regular full-time employees accrue 3.08 hours of sick leave per bi-weekly pay period for a total of eighty (80) hours per year. Sick leave accrual is unlimited

Deferred Compensation Plan: Through the 401(a) Plan, you and the City of Norcross work as partners to help build your financial security for retirement. When you participate, your savings grow through your pre-tax contributions, through the City's matching contributions, and through the investment growth of your total account. The City of Norcross will match your contribution at 50%, up to 6% of your base annual salary.
Flexible Spending Accounts: The City of Norcross provides the opportunity to enroll in Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA's) to help you save on eligible health and dependent care expenses by paying for them with pre-tax dollars.
Health Savings Accounts: The City of Norcross provides an initial one-time amount of $500.00 during enrollment of the plan. To be eligible, you must be enrolled in a high-deductible health plan(HDHP). HSA has tax advantages. An HSA is "portable." The contributions remain in your account until you use them.
