Job description

POSITION TITLE: Custodian (Temporary Full-time)

DEPARTMENT: Early Childhood 

LOCATION: Fort Hamilton Child and Family Center; 928 55th St., Brooklyn, NY

REPORTS TO: Center Director

SALARY RANGE: $37,340.16 - $38,191.40 

DATE: October 2025 (This position is temporary)

SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:30pm, or 8:30am - 5:30pm. Schedule may vary due to program needs. This position is temporary expected October 2025 - Temporary. 

JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Center Director, the custodian is responsible for maintaining the center premises and its equipment in clean, safe and comfortable conditions. This position is temporary expected October 2025 - Temporary. 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum - High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Previous related experiences in general janitorial duties, such as cleaning, repairing and painting.
  • Ability to read and write in order to follow written work schedules and keep inventory.
  • Friendly and cheerful personality to maintain cooperative interactions with staff, families and children
  • Ability to maintain personal work and habits.
  • Good health- including annual physical.
  • Acquire 3 Fire safety examinations within the probation period of employment, F-01, F-07, and S-95.

PRE- EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Clearance through DOI Fingerprint Screening, NYS Central Registry, Sex Offender Registry clearance, 3 reference checks, physical examination with updated TB test, varicella, Tdap, MMR (fees may apply)
  • Obtain Mandated Reporter training certificate (every 2 years) and comply with agency’s policy and procedure regarding identification and reporting of child abuse and neglect

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direct supervision of the Center Director, the Maintenance Staff shall be responsible for:

  • Cleaning: Responsible for sweeping, mopping, waxing all floors on site. Ensuring rest rooms and all spaces on site are free of debris, dust, and dirt as well as maintaining sanitary conditions throughout the day. This includes removing and cleaning garbage bins, washing walls and surfaces, cleaning fixtures, toilets and washbowls.
  • Records, Supplies and Equipment: Responsible for maintenance of Infection Control Logs, playground safety logs, carbon monoxide/smoke alarm and fire panel logs; Keeping inventory of distributed sanitary supplies and requesting more when needed; Repairing peeling paint, play equipment, furniture and other repairs on site as needed; Assisting in moving heavy items throughout the site.
  • Daily maintenance of site health and safety: Responsible for immediately repairing hazardous conditions on site, such as within the classroom and/or playground, replacing lights; contacting New York City Housing Authority, if located at a NYCHA to place tickets on necessary repairs that require NYCHA maintenance. Report to the Center Director of any necessary repairs and conditions.  Work collaboratively with the Center Director to resolve any facility issues.  
  • Work collaboratively with other building maintenance staff
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds
  • Other duties as assigned
