What is the difference between Full Time Physical Design Engineer vs Digital IC Design Engineer?

AspectFull Time Physical Design EngineerDigital IC Design Engineer
Primary FocusPhysical implementation, layout, timing, power optimizationLogic design, architecture, HDL coding, functional verification
Skills & CertificationsEDA tools, CMOS fabrication, timing analysisHDL languages (Verilog/VHDL), digital design principles
Work EnvironmentASIC/SoC design teams, EDA tool suitesDesign teams, simulation environments

Full Time Physical Design Engineers focus on the physical implementation of integrated circuits, ensuring optimal layout and timing. Digital IC Design Engineers concentrate on creating and verifying digital logic designs. While both roles require knowledge of digital design, physical design emphasizes layout and fabrication considerations, making them distinct yet complementary roles in chip development.

  • Lead the design, development, and validation of mechanical assemblies and product systems, including CAD modeling, tolerance and fit analysis, and strength calculations.
  • Design, prototype, test, and document mechanical designs for new product development.
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles such as mathematical modeling, FMEA, DVP&R, and manufacturing process knowlede.
  • Lead design reviews and guide technical decision-making across projects.
  • Develop and execute validation strategies, including testing at certified labs and field validation.
  • Estimate technical tasks, timelines, and project scope for customer engagements.
  • Contribute to and improve internal engineering tools, processes, and best practices.
  • Support business development through technical input on proposals and customer discussions.
  • Mentor entry-level engineers and contribute to developing team capabilities and consulting excellence.
  • Engage with customers and vendors on-site, providing technical leadership and building strong relationships.
What will make you successful:

  • Proven experience with CAD software such as Creo and/or Solidworks.
  • Advanced-level knowledge of design engineering tools such as FMEA and DVP&R.
  • Strong understanding of engineering materials (plastics, metals, composites) and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to travel to local customer sites is essential; occasional domestic travel.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work directly with customers and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to document work thoroughly and communicate technical concepts effectively.
  • Must have the current and continuing right to work in the United States of America without restrictions or expirations.
