This position will be filled at either Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Nuclear facility engineers perform system engineering, design engineering, project engineering, safety basis and nuclear criticality functions at LANL. Nuclear facility engineers define requirements for nuclear facilities, nuclear safety systems, nuclear operations equipment, nuclear operations procedures, nuclear test and acceptance requirements and nuclear quality requirements. Nuclear facility engineers integrate with programmatic, operations, maintenance, document control, project management personnel to ensure nuclear facility requirements are met in a way that allows for safe, secure, and effective accomplishment of LANL mission.
Identifies and/or leads activities within a nuclear facility engineering discipline. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Applies broad and diversified knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles and practices in the preparation of nuclear facility engineering deliverables. Utilizes nuclear engineering technology to accomplish work and continuously improves work processes to meet customer needs.
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 - $128,000 - $215,900
The nuclear facility engineering role supports the LANL nuclear mission by effectively and efficiently implementing nuclear facility engineering regulatory requirements including the Nuclear Safety Management Rule, DOE Orders and Standards, American Nuclear Society Standards, national consensus Codes and Standards, recognized quality standards, Laboratory requirements, and federal, state, and local regulations.
The candidate can either be a qualified Fire Protection Engineer or another engineering discipline (such as a Mechanical Engineer) with demonstrated experience or willingness, and ability to support Fire Protection systems.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 - $153,600 - $266,500

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level Identifies and/or leads activities within a nuclear facility engineering discipline. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Applies broad and diversified knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles and practices in the preparation of nuclear facility engineering deliverables. Utilizes nuclear engineering technology to accomplish work and continuously improves work processes to meet customer needs.
The candidate can either be a qualified Fire Protection Engineer or another engineering discipline (such as a Mechanical Engineer) with demonstrated experience or willingness, and ability to support Fire Protection systems.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Expertise
  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience with major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility fire protection systems (i.e. Fire Alarm, Fire Suppression, Specialty fire suppression systems, passive fire systems (fire barriers), inertion systems, and/or public address systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience with engineering design process and/or maintenance of fire protection systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience with fire modeling software and its application.
  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience with Codes and Standards, to include but not limited to the IBC, IEBC, NFPA, IFC, and/or UFC.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical issues to a broad audience.

  • Demonstrated ability working collaboratively, including participating in the implementation and commissioning of new techniques and unconventional methods related to system engineering and the ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet tight schedules and accomplish project goals while effectively networking with peers across an organization, business unit, and/or institution.

Tools and Systems
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience providing solutions for an extensive and diverse range of complex problems through the application of technology aided engineering tools such as CAD, CNC, CAE, etc. Proven ability to program and develop unique software analysis tools to resolve complex issues.

Safety
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety issues or potential hazards relating to nuclear or industrial facility operation systems and devices and the use of design features to mitigate risks and hazards, including the demonstrated ability to define deliverable and/or lead projects related to safety.

Leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with all levels of personnel and customers, as well as experience providing technical direction, mentoring, coordinating/monitoring the work of others, and serving as a role model for effective and creative technical leadership.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in nuclear facility engineering processes, maintenance techniques, work planning and control development, Quality, Safety Basis and other Nuclear Facility safety management programs. Demonstrated experience working with industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the nuclear facility engineering discipline. Including Expert knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles and procedures, guides, and administrative practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience with major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility fire protection systems (i.e. Fire Alarm, Fire Suppression, Specialty fire suppression systems, passive fire systems (fire barriers), inertion systems, and/or public address systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience with engineering design process and/or maintenance of fire protection systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience with fire modeling software and its application.
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience with Codes and Standards, to include but not limited to the IBC, IEBC, NFPA, IFC, and/or UFC.
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in preparing and reviewing technical reports and studies as part of establishing and maintaining Technical Baseline for new and existing facility structural systems.

  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in defining or establishing design or analysis tasks and prepare design concepts that meet both the regulatory and performance requirements for systems and equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in developing design details, design or analysis calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements, as applicable.
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in evaluating and trending system health.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of the design as the FP SME.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineering interns and other engineers.

Leadership
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience contributing as a leader in engineering, through the proven ability to integrate and coordinate multi-facility deployed, cross-functional technical work activities. Experience in leadership as demonstrated through the proven ability to meet deliverables for senior management and lead projects while enhancing the technical and professional skills of junior engineers through active mentoring and training.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Education/Experience at higher level:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
