The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is seeking a dependable and compassionate Animal Care Team Lead to support the daily operations of our Animal Care team. This role helps guide day-to-day animal care, supports team members and volunteers, and helps ensure animals receive consistent, high-quality care in a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. This is a great opportunity for someone with animal care experience who enjoys leading by example, supporting others, solving problems, and staying hands-on in a fast-paced shelter environment.
Schedule
- 40 hours per week
- Tuesday through Saturday - 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM

What You’ll Do
- Help lead the daily operations of the Animal Care team.
- Support, mentor, and train team members while leading by example.
- Monitor animal health, behavior, and wellbeing and communicate concerns promptly.
- Assist with animal care, cleaning, feeding, animal movement, and facility needs as needed.
- Help maintain clean, organized, and safe animal care areas.
- Support volunteers, visitors, and team members with professionalism and compassion.
- Follow animal handling, safety, sanitation, and organizational procedures.
What We’re Looking For
- High school diploma or GED, required.
- At least one year of professional animal care experience, required.
- Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to stay organized and flexible in a fast-paced environment.
- Comfort working with animals of varying sizes, species, temperaments, and needs.
- Basic computer proficiency.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements
This position works in an active animal shelter environment and may require prolonged standing, walking, bending, cleaning, safely handling animals, working indoors and outdoors, and lifting up to 40 pounds. The role may involve exposure to moderate noise, animal waste, cleaning chemicals, zoonotic diseases, and the possibility of bites or scratches while following established safety procedures.
