Job description

This Position reports to:

R&D Team Lead

As a Product Sustainability Engineer, you drive sustainability initiatives across the Electrification, Installation Products Canada division product portfolio by integrating sustainability principles into product development. You lead the execution of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) programs, ABB EcoSolutions nominations activities, and environmental compliance initiatives while collaborating with local and global teams to improve product environmental performance and sustainability targets.

This role is contributing to the Electrification, Installation Products division of ABB Canada and is located in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

The work model is hybrid, with 2-3 days per week at the office.

Responsibilities

Product Sustainability

  • Support R&D team in integrating sustainability considerations into new product development and product improvement activities.
  • Identify and propose initiatives to reduce product environmental impact across the lifecycle.
  • Support R&D team on sustainable product design choices, sustainable material selection and environmental best practices.
  • Promote sustainability awareness and continuous improvement within the R&D organization.

EPD, Circularity Assessments & ABB EcoSolutions

  • Lead the execution of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) programs for the ELIP Canada product portfolio, coordinating scope definition, data collection, external verification, and publication activities.
  • Coordinate with engineering, supply chain, operations, and suppliers to gather and validate sustainability-related data.
  • Perform circularity assessments and identify opportunities to improve recyclability, resource efficiency, and end-of-life performance.
  • Coordinate ABB EcoSolutions nominations and prepare the required documentation.

Environmental Compliance

  • Support environmental compliance activities for the Canadian product portfolio.
  • Monitor and assess environmental requirements including RoHS, REACH, PFAS, and other emerging regulations.
  • Coordinate compliance documentation and supplier data collection in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support customer, regulatory, and internal compliance requests related to product environmental requirements.

Collaboration & Project Support

  • Plan, coordinate, and monitor sustainabilityprojects,activities and milestones across multiple functions.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Product Management, Supply Chain, Operations, Quality, and external stakeholders to achieve sustainabilityobjectives.
  • Collaborate with global ABB sustainability teams and researchcentersto align local initiatives with global sustainability practices, tools, and programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental engineering, sustainability engineering, materials engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 2-5 years of experience in sustainability, environmental compliance, product development, or a related technical field.
  • Bilingual in French and English (spoken and written). English is necessary to communicate with clients outside Quebec.
  • Knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies and sustainability principles.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations such as RoHS, REACH, and PFAS.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage technical data.
  • Knowledge of circular economy principles and sustainable product design is an asset.
  • Experience with environmental compliance management tools is an asset.
  • Project management experience is an asset.
  • Self-driven, proactive, and results-oriented with a strong sense of ownership.
  • Strong ability to influence and drive change without direct authority.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including international teams.
