Full Time Liquid Penetrant Testing information

What is full time liquid penetrant testing?

Full Time Liquid Penetrant Testing refers to a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to detect surface-breaking defects in non-porous materials, such as metals, plastics, or ceramics. Technicians apply a liquid dye to the surface of a component, which seeps into any cracks or flaws. After a set time, excess dye is removed and a developer is applied, making any penetrant trapped in defects visible under ultraviolet or visible light. This method is commonly used in industries like aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing to ensure the integrity and safety of critical parts.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a full time liquid penetrant testing technician?

As a Full Time Liquid Penetrant Testing technician, your daily tasks generally include preparing and cleaning parts, applying penetrant solutions, allowing appropriate dwell times, and carefully inspecting for defects using UV or visible light. You’ll be responsible for interpreting results, documenting findings, and ensuring that all work complies with applicable safety and industry standards. Collaboration with other nondestructive testing team members and quality assurance staff is common, especially when reviewing complex results or troubleshooting equipment. Staying detail-oriented and maintaining accurate records are essential to succeed in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time liquid penetrant testing technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Liquid Penetrant Testing Technician, you need knowledge of non-destructive testing (NDT) principles, attention to detail, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent, along with NDT Level I or II certification in liquid penetrant testing. Familiarity with NDT equipment, chemicals used in penetrant testing, and reporting systems is essential. Strong observational skills, integrity, and effective communication make a candidate stand out in this role. These skills ensure accurate defect detection, adherence to safety and quality standards, and reliable documentation critical to maintaining structural integrity in various industries.

What is the difference between Full Time Liquid Penetrant Testing vs Full Time Magnetic Particle Testing?

AspectFull Time Liquid Penetrant TestingFull Time Magnetic Particle Testing
CertificationsLevel I or II in Liquid Penetrant TestingLevel I or II in Magnetic Particle Testing
Work EnvironmentNon-porous surfaces, open areas, manufacturing plantsFerromagnetic materials, workshops, industrial sites
Industry UsageAerospace, automotive, manufacturingPower generation, oil & gas, manufacturing

Both Liquid Penetrant Testing and Magnetic Particle Testing are nondestructive testing methods used to detect surface flaws. While they share similar certifications and work environments, Liquid Penetrant Testing is ideal for non-magnetic materials, whereas Magnetic Particle Testing is used on ferromagnetic materials. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right method for specific inspection needs.

Job description

CoolIT Systems, Inc. is hiring a full-time  Test Specialist (Mechanical/PCL)  to lead passive cold plate loop and vertical rack manifold testing and qualification activities. In this role, you will develop and execute test plans to verify products meet internal and customer requirements. You will analyze hardware and software specifications, design test strategies, and evaluate the performance and reliability of electromechanical systems. Responsibilities include conducting temperature, pressure, flow, and mechanical stress tests, identifying design issues, troubleshooting failures through root cause analysis, and supporting engineering improvements. You will also assist with test equipment development, component selection, technical documentation, and detailed reporting of test results and recommendations.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and implement NPI product validation and qualification test plans for thermal and fluid-cooling systems, focusing on cold plates, manifolds, seals, and electromechanical assemblies.

  • Apply heat transfer and thermodynamics principles and knowledge to interpret thermal tests for liquid-cooled components.

  • Understand hardware and software requirements and design documents to develop comprehensive test strategies and procedures.

  • Design and evaluate validation protocols, including HALT, thermal, pressure, mechanical, flow (PQ), thermal performance (RQ), and packaging integrity testing.

  • Investigate failure modes including fatigue, corrosion, creep, thermal cycle degradation, and manufacturing defects.

  • Perform risk assessments based on bill of material, design reviews, manufacturing processes and other available engineering documents to qualify products.

  • Conduct material compatibility evaluations on metals, elastomers, polymers, fittings, and surface-finished components.

  • Prepare technical reports and validation documentation to support engineering release and customer approval.

  • Analyze test data to validate design performance and recommend design improvements to ensure compliance with technical specifications.

  • Conduct root cause analysis of test failures and coordinate cross-functional corrective actions.

  • Exercise engineering judgment in technical disposition and decisions in collaboration with cross functional teams.

  • Provide technical guidance and training to technicians and technologists.

  • Maintain test logs, records, and reports in alignment with internal processes.

  • Ensure compliance with all lab safety requirements and best practices.

WHO YOU ARE:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or other relevant field.

  • Proven experience in solidworks design, including 3D modeling, detailed drawings, assembly design, and design for manufacturability (DFM).

  • A minimum of 3 years of engineering experience in a testing environment.

  • Working knowledge of instrumentation including pressure transducers, temperatures sensors, flow sensors, etc.

  • Solid experience in setting up and using DAQ's, sensors, and actuators for data-driven analysis.

  • Experience in using diagnostic bench tools (oscilloscope, power analyzer, logic analyzer, multimeter, etc.).

  • Demonstrated experience in analyzing, testing, and qualifying electro-mechanical parts and systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree is considered an asset.

  • P.Eng designation considered an asset.

  • Experience with data center liquid cooling systems.

  • Familiarity with rack-level cooling infrastructure such as manifolds, hoses, quick disconnects, and fittings.

Skills:
