Job Number: 202400037
Department: Electric
Opening Date: 03/11/2026
Description
The City of Geneva Electric Utility, a division of the City of Geneva Public Works Department, is seeking qualified journeyman linemen to join our IBEW-represented team. Due to recent retirements and promotions, we currently have three vacancies across two divisions: generation and field service. This is a great opportunity for journeymen who are looking for strong pay and benefits without living on storm calls.
Examples of Duties
Applicants should have knowledge of methods and procedures required in the maintenance/construction of electric utility systems, including: proper use of tools and equipment; related hazards and safety precautions; and applicable codes and standards governing the construction/maintenance of overhead and underground electric distribution systems.
Lineman will be able to safely and efficiently install, maintain, and repair components of the electric utility system; isolate and correct electrical system faults, breaks and cuts; work safely with high voltage overhead and underground power cables, transformers and related electric utility facilities and equipment; operate a backhoe, bucket/boom truck; maintain and care for assigned tools and equipment; read, understand, and interpret engineering plans and specifications; deal tactfully, and professionally with supervisors, contractors, engineers, and property owners; communicate effectively; and be able to use a computer to enter, extract and query data. Reliable attendance, punctuality and availability are essential to the position.
Physical requirements include the ability to perform moderately demanding physical work, such as lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Push/pull supply carts or equipment, deal with hazardous materials, and work in uncomfortable areas due to dirt, drafts, fumes, noise, lighting, or temperature variation.
Must be able to perform duties requiring extreme precaution to avoid injury, and to raise, climb and work without the fear of heights. Must be capable of distinguishing primary colors.
Applicants must have or be able to obtain a State of Illinois Class A CDL driver's license within six months of being hired. The City of Geneva requires residency within 16 miles of the city limits within one year of hire.
Typical Qualifications
Qualified candidates must have obtained the following:
  • Completion of an accredited apprenticeship program
  • Journeyman Lineman certification
  • Five years of experience as a Journeyman Lineman preferred
  • Valid CDL (or ability to obtain)
  • Strong safety record
  • Experience in distribution systems preferred

Supplemental Information
The hours for this position are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday. Employees are subject to a rotating stand-by/on-call schedule and are required to report back for after-hours outages and storms when necessary.
We offer a complete benefits package to full-time employees including health care, dental, vision, retirement, deferred compensation plans, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, long-term disability, holidays, vacation, and sick leave.
