Job description

The Radiation Therapist accurately administers external beam radiation therapy to patients according to the physician prescription.  The Radiation Therapist records all aspects of treatment and accounts for any deviation in the process, immediately notifying the physician, physicist, department manager and/or director of any errors.

Essential Functions

- Performs start up procedures for the linear accelerator and simulator.

- Consistently performs morning quality assurance (QA).

- Documents QA and reports any deviations of > or = to 3% to the physicist.

- Fabricates immobilization devices & performs computed tomography (CT) simulations in a reproducible manner.

- Prepares patients for treatment based on documentation from simulation.

- Performs pre-treatment patient QA on linear accelerator for physicist review.

- Documents patient setup and communicates deviations or problems to the physician.

- Completes daily treatment according to the physician order and treatment plan.

- Performs image-guided radiation therapy or weekly portal imaging as prescribed. 

- Submits billing based on treatment or imaging utilized.

- Performs initial therapy chart checks prior to a new start, and completes all associated tasks such as creating the Tx calendar, running QA, scheduling treatment and on-treatment visit appointments, etc.

-Verifies the presence of required documentation; notifies the physician if documentation is missing or inaccurate, schedules and performs simulations.

- Performs weekly chart checks.

- Participates in chart rounds and tumor board.

- Practices all aspects of radiation safety and reports any machine malfunctions.

- Promotes Patient Safety Standards as a core value of the organization.

 

Other Duties

 

- Participates in departmental and hospital-wide informational meetings and in services, including staff meetings, hospital-wide forums, and seminars.

- Reviews department policies and procedures annually.

Abilities

This position requires operational knowledge of all office equipment in the Oncology Department (including fax, printer, phone systems, and computer), commonly used hospital computer programs (including Hospital Information Systems), and all department specific equipment (including linear accelerator, simulator). Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English. Must also be service oriented and have excellent customer service skills, professional interpersonal skills, time management skills, math skills, and the ability to prioritize work.

Physical Demands

Exerts up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. The worker is exposed to contact with chemicals and infectious fluids, heavy lifting, constant standing, extensive close work, and extensive computer work.

Required Education and Experience

- Current American Registry of Radiologic Techs (ARRT) National Certification for Radiation Therapist licensure.

- Current Arizona State CTT Radiation Therapist certification.

- Maintain current BLS certification at all times.

OSHA Exposure Category

Involves exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

This is a safety sensitive position.
