What does a full time lifeguard do?

A Full Time Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of swimmers and guests at pools, beaches, or water parks. They monitor water activities, enforce safety rules, and respond to emergencies by performing rescues or providing first aid when needed. With training provided, candidates do not need prior lifeguard experience, as employers offer the necessary certifications and safety courses. Full time positions typically involve regular shifts, often including weekends and holidays. Lifeguards also help maintain the cleanliness of the facility and may assist with administrative tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time lifeguard?

To thrive as a Full Time Lifeguard, you need strong swimming ability, knowledge of water safety protocols, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Lifeguards usually obtain certifications in CPR, First Aid, and lifeguarding through organizations like the American Red Cross, and may use rescue equipment and communication radios. Excellent observation skills, quick decision-making, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are crucial soft skills. These skills and qualifications ensure the safety and well-being of pool or beach visitors by enabling lifeguards to prevent and respond effectively to emergencies.

What can I expect during my first few weeks as a full time lifeguard?

During your initial weeks, you'll participate in comprehensive training sessions that cover water rescue techniques, CPR, first aid, and pool safety protocols. You'll shadow experienced lifeguards to observe best practices and learn the facility's specific procedures. Expect to gradually take on more responsibility as you gain confidence, including monitoring swimmers, enforcing safety rules, and responding to emergencies. Teamwork is essential, so you'll collaborate closely with other lifeguards and supervisors to ensure a safe and supportive environment. This period is designed to build your skills and confidence before you’re assigned full shifts on your own.
