Westcliff University is seeking an experienced and committed individual to serve as an External Member on its Institutional Review Board (IRB). The IRB is responsible for protecting the rights, welfare, and privacy of human research participants. The External IRB Member brings an independent, non-affiliated perspective to the ethical review of research studies, ensuring objectivity and public accountability in the oversight process.


Essential Job Functions

  • Attend regularly scheduled IRB meetings (typically monthly or as needed).
  • Review IRB applications and supporting materials to assess ethical soundness, regulatory compliance, and participant protections.
  • Return feedback on all applications, within ten (10) business days to the IRB Chair for dissemination to the researcher.
  • Contribute to IRB deliberations by offering insights from a non-affiliated Westcliff University perspective.
  • Evaluate risks and benefits to human subjects and assess the adequacy of protections against potential risks.
  • Maintain confidentiality of research materials and IRB deliberations.
  • Maintain current CITI Training Certification (or any other IRB type certification the University approves) and participate in all additional training set by the IRB Chair or University.
  • Stay current with federal regulations (e.g., 45 CFR 46), ethical standards, and institutional policies governing research.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree from an accredited university.
  • Current CITI Certifications as required by Westcliff University.
  • Previous IRB committee member experience.
  • Must not be affiliated with Westcliff University through employment or significant financial interests.
  • Demonstrated commitment to upholding ethical standards in research.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Working knowledge of doctoral dissertation standards and requirements.
  • Prior experience as a dissertation chair/committee member.
