Job Description

1. Organization and Purpose

The Spray Technician is responsible for chemical applications on golf course properties and fertilizes greens, tees, fairways and ornamental areas. The Spray Technician is also responsible for preventive maintenance to chemically applied equipment. This position reports to the Superintendent.

2. Scope and Impact

The Spray Technician uses a variety of mechanically pressurized spray equipment, hand-operated spray equipment, hand-operated rotary and drop spreaders and utility tractors. The Spray Technician also operates vehicles and equipment in either a specific or variety of maintenance, construction and/or utility tasks. Work is characterized by the necessity for considerable physical exertion and by working outdoors under extreme weather conditions. Work involves heavy lifting, exposure to chemicals, fumes and machinery with moving parts, loud noise, dirt and irrigated water.

3. Essential Functions

Chemical Preparation and Application

Maintains chemical storage and mixing areas in compliance with county, state and federal regulations and is responsible for the safety and direction of chemical handlers and/or helpers.

Manages inventory and usage of applications, pesticides and fertilizers.

Reads and interprets labels to perform calculations on parts per million solution, chemical doses and area measurements and formulas.

Compiles preliminary reports of pesticide usage.

Develops/works with Superintendent for pesticide and fertility programs.

Properly applies chemicals and fertilizers to maintain quality of golf course.

Equipment Maintenance

Performs routine safety inspections on all spraying equipment.

Operates sprayers and spreaders.

Uses methods of calibrating applicators.

Safety

Keeps M.S.D.S books current.

Reads and follows county, state and federal laws.

Keeps work area neat and organized as necessary for efficient job performance.

Positions exposure to unguarded machinery having moving parts.

Wears all protective equipment required by the label or governing authority.

4. Marginal Functions

Performs all other duties and responsibilities in a timely manner as assigned by the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent, or any other Corporate manager.

Qualifications

Job Requirements

A. Education/Experience Required

Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited high school. Education requirement may be waived by experience.

Solid experience and knowledgeable in all areas of chemical sprays and equipment.

Pest Controller's License (Category type 3) obtained within 90 days.

B. Technical Skills and Knowledge Required

Must have knowledge of pumps used to apply chemicals (piston, centrifugal, diaphragm and gear).

Knowledge of and/or ability to learn about occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Knowledge of electricity and its components as it is related to irrigation system and machinery.

Knowledge of hydraulic operations/repairs as related to pumps, controls and transmission devices.

Knowledge of and/or ability to learn about occupational hazards and safety precautions.

C. Interpersonal Skills

Maintains a favorable working relationship with all co-workers to foster and promote a cooperative and harmonious working climate to help keep high morale and productivity.

Requires ability to focus on many tasks and projects at once.

Self-starter, self-motivated, adaptable, able to work with minimal direction in a high pressure environment.

Must be able to work with the golfing public in a courteous and responsible manner.

A desire to learn and participate in the ongoing improvements and enhancement of the golf course grounds.

D. Language Skills

Must communicate effectively with other employees in the maintenance department and Pro Shop area.

Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with co-workers and manager.

E. Physical Demands/Work Environment

Work outdoors under extreme weather conditions at times. Some work may be performed inside due to circumstances related to mechanical breakdowns.

Involves heavy lifting, exposure to chemicals, fumes and machinery with moving parts, loud noise, dirt and irrigated water.

Significant physical movements to stand, stoop and walk as part of the work routine.

Frequent physical actions such as climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling.

Frequent and ongoing lifting of objects weighing up to 100 pounds.

Regular reaching with hands and arms.

Frequent use of hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.

Ongoing exposure to wet and extreme hot and cold weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration.

Occasional exposure to risk of electrical shock, therefore following safety guidelines is extremely important.
