What is a Full Time FastAPI developer?

A Full Time FastAPI developer is a software professional who specializes in building web APIs and backend services using the FastAPI framework, working as their primary occupation. FastAPI is a modern, high-performance web framework for Python known for its speed, ease of use, and automatic interactive documentation. These developers typically design, develop, and maintain robust APIs, integrate databases, ensure security, and collaborate with front-end and DevOps teams. Working full time means they dedicate a standard workweek (usually 40 hours) to these tasks, often as part of a larger development team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time FastAPI Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time FastAPI Developer, you need strong proficiency in Python programming, RESTful API design, and web development concepts, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with FastAPI framework, SQL and NoSQL databases, Docker, and tools like Git is typically required, along with knowledge of deployment and testing systems. Problem-solving, collaboration, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help developers work efficiently with teams and address client requirements. These skills and qualities ensure robust, scalable, and maintainable web applications that meet business needs.

How does a Full Time FastAPI developer typically collaborate with frontend teams during the development process?

A Full Time FastAPI developer often works closely with frontend teams to ensure seamless integration between backend APIs and user interfaces. This collaboration usually involves regular meetings to clarify API requirements, sharing detailed API documentation, and coordinating on endpoint changes or feature rollouts. FastAPI's automatic documentation generation (like Swagger UI) also helps frontend developers test endpoints independently. Effective communication and iterative feedback are key to maintaining alignment and delivering robust, user-friendly applications.

Job description

Overview

Essen Health Care is the largest privately held, multispecialty medical group in New York, providing high-quality, compassionate care to some of the state's most vulnerable and underserved residents.

Founded in 1999, we've grown from a single primary care office into a network of 50+ locations offering urgent care, primary care and specialty services, from women's health to endocrinology and psychiatry. We also provide nursing home support, care management, and in-home care through our Essen House Calls program. Guided by a Population Health model, our team of 500+ providers deliver care in-person, at home, or via telehealth, ensuring patients get the support they need when and where they need it.

We're looking for talented, motivated individuals to join our growing team. Whether you're a medical provider, administrator, or operations professional, there's a career here for you. Join us in making a real difference in the health of our community.

Job Summary

Position Title: Senior Software Engineer

The role:

We're hiring Software Engineers to join our founding engineering team. You'll take well-scoped technical work from our principal engineers and ship it, end to end: features, integrations, bug fixes, infrastructure improvements. You'll work across the full stack, and you'll have full ownership over what you build.

Responsibilities

What you'll own

The work here spans the full platform. Some examples of what you might be building in a given week:

Implementing clinical rules that determine which patients need outreach and for what (e.g., a diabetic patient who hasn't seen endocrinology in 6 months)

Building AI automations that interact with payor and Medicaid systems to understand and leverage insurance benefits on behalf of patients

Working on EHR integrations that pull patient data, push appointment updates, and keep systems in sync

Using LLMs to deliver critical patient context to care coordinators so they can educate and engage patients

Improving infrastructure: API performance, data pipelines, deployment tooling, test coverage

Day to day, you'll pick up work from a prioritized queue, build it well, write tests, submit PRs, and ship. You'll work with principal engineers when the technical approach needs clarification and participate in code review across the team.

Qualifications

What we're looking for

5+ years of professional software engineering experience

Comfortable working across the stack, backend and frontend

Strong fundamentals: data structures, system design basics, debugging, writing testable code

Self-directed and comfortable with focused, independent work

Thorough. You think through edge cases, write tests, and care about getting it right

Excited to own features and work with the team to deliver them our users

Our stack: Python (FastAPI), React/TypeScript, MSSQL, Redis, Azure (Container Apps, Static Web Apps, DevOps Pipelines), Terraform. The ability to learn and contribute is more important than matching our stack exactly.

Nice to have

Health tech or healthcare experience

Experience with EHR systems or healthcare data

Experience working in compliance-heavy or regulated environments

Familiarity with Azure cloud services

Background working with underserved communities or in mission-driven organizations

Location

Based in the Bronx, co-located with Essen Health Care. We sit next to the care coordinators, clinicians, and operators who use the platform every day and work in a community that we serve. Instead of scheduling a user research session, you can walk down the block and see someone using what you built.

Hybrid: 3 days on-site, 2 days remote.

Why this role

You'll be a founding engineer building something from the ground up. You'll make decisions that shape the platform for years. You'll learn healthcare deeply, which is a career-making domain. And you'll work alongside strong engineers on a small team with no bureaucracy, and where what you build goes directly into the hands of the people who deliver care.

Equal Opportunity Employer

Essen Health care is proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and we seek candidates who desire to work in and serve an ethnically diverse population.
