Job description

Manager, Software Engineering, CoCounsel Legal
Where does human judgement meet AI output? For legal professionals, the answer is increasingly a table: a structured surface where they verify, compare, and refine what AI produces across thousands of documents before a real decision gets made. Do you want to lead the team building that surface for the world's leading legal AI assistant?
CoCounsel Tabular Analysis lets legal professionals run structured question sets across thousands of documents and review AI-generated answers in a collaborative, filterable table. Launched in early 2026, it is now being integrated natively into CoCounsel's next-generation agentic platform - and the product vision extends well beyond that. As Engineering Manager, you will lead a senior, high-ownership team, driving delivery that spans multiple platform teams. This is a role for an experienced manager energized by cross-team execution in a fast-moving, competitive market.
About the Role
In this opportunity as a Manager, Software Engineering, you will:
  • Lead and empower a senior engineering team: own hiring, performance, career growth, and promotion advocacy, and create the conditions for experienced engineers to own technical direction - backing them with delivery management and organizational air cover.
  • Drive delivery across team boundaries: plan, sequence, and unblock work that depends on platform, files, and agent teams; negotiate dependencies and integration contracts; and keep multi-team initiatives moving to committed dates.
  • Ship iteratively under real deadlines: negotiate scope, favor incremental releases and feature-flagged rollouts, and make pragmatic trade-offs between speed and completeness in a market where competitors ship frequently.
  • Build engineering resilience: reduce single-person dependencies in critical systems through design reviews, pairing, and documentation, so the team's architecture outlives any one engineer.
  • Represent the team in platform architecture decisions: advocate for the capabilities the product needs as the next-generation platform takes shape.
  • Own roadmap delivery: partner with product and design to sequence and ship a roadmap that extends well beyond the initial platform integration, grounded in customer problems and competitive insight.

About You
You're a fit for the role of Software Engineering Manager if you have the following required qualifications:
  • 2+ years of direct people-management experience for software engineers, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
  • 8+ years of overall software engineering experience, including hands-on work with Python-based backend systems and enough distributed-systems depth to engage credibly in architecture discussions about data platforms and high-volume processing
  • A track record of delivering complex initiatives that spanned multiple teams - for example a replatform, migration, or deep platform integration - where much of the critical path sat outside your own team.
  • Demonstrated delivery management under fixed external deadlines: scope negotiation, incremental delivery, feature-flag strategies, and clear risk communication to leadership.
  • Comfort operating amid organizational and product ambiguity - you stay effective, and keep a team motivated, while ownership boundaries and scope are still being settled.
  • Experience leading distributed teams that blend full-time engineers and contractors across time zones.

Additional preferred qualifications include:
  • Experience building LLM-powered or agentic products, or platforms that other teams build on.
  • Background in document-intensive or regulated enterprise software (legal, tax, compliance, financial services).
  • Experience growing senior individual contributors into technical leadership roles.
