Overview

Engineer the technology behind our innovative products!

As a Senior Engineer, Embedded Systems Development, you will work in the Product Development Division performing design and development tasks on software embedded in hardware devices for professional audio products. You will also work cross-functionally with various teams, bringing creative problem-solving and fresh perspectives to the design, development, and optimization of advanced embedded systems.

ย The ideal candidate can demonstrate deep knowledge of Android-based products and Embedded Android/AOSP environments to effectively manage Shure devices, support system functionality, and drive the development of reliable, high-performing embedded solutions.

This role is based in our Niles, IL headquarters and will be hybrid.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop and test software for embeddedย Androidย based products with focus on standard networking protocols for managing Shure devices and supporting system functionality
  • Tailor and build custom Android OS (AOSP) images, working closely with SoC board support packages (BSPs) and HAL layer integrations.ย 
  • Write, optimize, and maintain low-level C/C++ native code, JNI bindings, and custom Android HALs (Hardware Abstraction Layers) to interface with peripheral devices and sensors.ย 
  • Build key system services, background processes, and high-performance applications in Kotlin and Java.ย 
  • Diagnose and resolve complex system issues, including memory leaks, thread contention, power consumption, boot-time optimization, and driver interactions.ย 
  • Work as part of a cross-functional development team to design and implement cutting edge audio products and technologiesย 
  • Estimate, organize, and document tasksย 
  • Practice established software development methodologies and principles focusing on separation of concerns, re-usability, maintainability, minimized complexity, high cohesion and low couplingย 
  • Model designs using UML and related methods; develop use cases to model real-time systems behaviorย 
  • Architect maintainable system designsย 
  • Review the design and code developed by peer engineersย 
  • More senior engineers will mentor junior and entry-level staff membersย 
  • Other duties as assignedย 
Qualifications
  • BS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Computer Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 4 years of embedded software development experienceย withย at leastย two years focused on Embedded Android/AOSP.ย 
  • Demonstrated understanding of software design, analysis and programming using C++ and/orย C,ย Java, Kotlinย 
  • Strongย expertiseย inย C++ย (Modern C++11/14/17) for native development and system performance.ย 
  • Deepย proficiencyย inย Javaย andย Kotlinย for framework and system service layer development.ย 
  • Hands-on experience with AOSP build systems (Soong, Ninja, Android.bp, Android.mk), Android HAL architecture (HIDL/AIDL), system services, and Linux kernel drivers/interfaces.ย 
  • Experience using the Android NDK, JNI development, and IPC mechanisms (Binder, Sockets, Shared Memory).ย 
  • Proficiency with Git, Linux command-line tools, Android Studio, ADB, and debugging tools (GDB, Valgrind, Systrace/Perfetto).ย 
  • Experience solving problems following SOLID and OO design principles
  • Demonstrated expertise with debugging using protocol analyzers, Wireshark, etc.ย 
  • Experience with software version control and releaseย 
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to analyze complex interdependent variablesย 
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skillsย 
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment and lead junior engineers

    • Experience with custom board bring-up on ARM architecture (e.g., Qualcomm, NXP,ย Rockchip).ย 
    • Hands-on knowledge of hardware protocols like UART, I2C, SPI, GPIO, USB, and Bluetooth/BLE.ย 
    • Exposure toย automated testing for embedded devices and CI/CD pipelines tailored for hardware/AOSP.ย 
    • Knowledge of Android security architectures (SELinuxย policies,ย trustzones, secure boot).ย
