What is a full time dog trainer?

Full time dog trainers are professionals who work with dogs to teach obedience, modify behavior, and sometimes prepare them for specific roles such as service or therapy work. They use positive reinforcement, consistency, and specialized techniques to help dogs learn commands and good manners. Full time trainers may work for training centers, pet stores, animal shelters, or run their own businesses. Their responsibilities often include working directly with dogs and their owners, developing training plans, and troubleshooting behavioral issues. This career requires patience, strong communication skills, and a deep understanding of canine behavior.

What is the difference between Full Time Dog Trainer vs Part Time Dog Trainer?

Part Time Dog Trainers work fewer hours, often with less formal credentials, offering flexible schedules. Both roles involve similar environments but differ mainly in hours and commitment level.

What are some common challenges faced by full time dog trainers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Full-time dog trainers often encounter challenges such as working with dogs that have behavioral issues, managing client expectations, and maintaining consistent training progress. Effective communication with dog owners is crucial to ensure that training techniques are reinforced at home. Additionally, trainers must stay patient and adaptable, as each dog learns differently and may require customized approaches. Building strong relationships with both pets and their owners helps foster a positive training environment and leads to better outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time dog trainer?

To thrive as a Full Time Dog Trainer, you need a solid understanding of canine behavior, training methodologies, and often a certification from organizations like the CCPDT or APDT. Familiarity with training tools such as clickers, leashes, and dog training software is typically required. Patience, strong communication skills, and the ability to build rapport with both dogs and their owners are standout soft skills. These qualifications are vital for ensuring effective training outcomes, client satisfaction, and the safety and well-being of the animals involved.

Now Hiring: Lead Dog Trainer — Build & Run Our Training Program

Are you an experienced dog trainer ready to take ownership of a growing training program? Our established dog boarding and daycare facility is hiring a Full-Time Dog Trainer to design, lead, and operate all training services — including private lessons, obedience training, and board-and-train programs. This is a long-term opportunity with strong earning potential and growth.

About Our Business & What We’re Looking For in a Dog Trainer

We are a well-established dog boarding and daycare facility dedicated to providing a safe, structured, and enriching environment for dogs of all breeds and sizes. As we continue to grow, we are expanding our services to include professional training programs and are seeking a motivated, experienced Full-Time Dog Trainer to build and lead our training department.

This is a unique opportunity for a trainer who wants full ownership of program development and execution. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating, managing, and delivering all training services — including private lessons, all obedience programs, and immersive board-and-train packages. We are looking for someone who is passionate about dog behavior, client education, and building long-term training success.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement all training programs and service offerings
  • Conduct one-on-one private training sessions
  • Lead group obedience classes
  • Manage and execute multi-week board-and-train programs
  • Evaluate dogs’ behavior and training needs and create customized training plans
  • Work closely with boarding and daycare staff to ensure consistency in handling and training methods
  • Educate pet owners on proper techniques, follow-up exercises, and behavior management
  • Maintain accurate training records and progress reports
  • Assist with training consultations and client onboarding
  • Ensure all training practices follow humane, ethical, and safety-focused standards
  • Help grow the training program through quality service and client retention

Compensation & Pay Range

Pay Range: $50,000 – $100,000+ annually (based on experience, certifications, and performance)

Compensation structure may include:

  • Competitive base pay
  • Performance incentives or commission on training services and packages
  • Opportunities for earnings growth as the training program expands

Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience level, and demonstrated training ability.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years professional dog training experience
  • Experience working with a variety of breeds, temperaments, and behavioral challenges
  • Proven experience conducting private lessons and obedience training
  • Experience with board-and-train programs
  • Background in canine behavior, training certifications, or formal education
  • Comfortable handling large dogs and high-energy breeds
  • Prior customer-facing experience working directly with pet owners

Skills & Qualifications

  • Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT) or equivalent
  • Behavior Consultant / Behaviorist Training and/or Certification
  • Strong knowledge of canine behavior, learning theory, and training techniques
  • Excellent communication and client education skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage a training program from the ground up
  • Reliable, professional, and highly organized
  • Patient, calm, and confident handling dogs of all sizes
  • Physically capable of standing, walking, lifting, and working outdoors when needed
  • Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability
  • Passion for animal welfare and continuous learning

We are very active in the local community, supporting and volunteering with various organizations, and assisting animal rescue groups. This is a family business and we treat our employees like family - one team.
