Is digital product design a good career?

Digital product design is a viable career that involves creating user interfaces and experiences for digital products, often requiring skills in design tools like Figma or Adobe XD and understanding user-centered design principles. It offers opportunities in various industries, with demand driven by the growth of digital services and technology companies. Success in this field depends on continuous learning and adapting to new tools and trends.

Are digital designers in demand?

Digital designers, including full-time digital product designers, are in high demand as companies prioritize user experience and digital interfaces. Skills in UX/UI design, proficiency with tools like Adobe XD or Figma, and a strong portfolio can improve job prospects in this growing field.

Full Time Digital Product Designers and UX Designers often share skills like user research and prototyping. Both roles are essential in product development, but their emphasis differs based on project needs.

Is 40 too old to become an UX designer?

Full Time Digital Product Designers can start their careers at any age, including 40 or older. Success in UX design depends on skills, portfolio, and experience with tools like Figma or Adobe XD, rather than age. Many professionals transition into UX design later in life and find rewarding opportunities in the field.

Is AI replacing product designers?

AI is transforming the role of full-time digital product designers by automating repetitive tasks and providing data-driven insights, but it does not replace the need for human creativity, user empathy, and strategic thinking. Designers are increasingly using AI tools to enhance their work, focusing on complex problem-solving and user experience design. The profession continues to evolve alongside technological advancements, emphasizing skills in both design and AI literacy.

Job description

About Away
We believe travel makes us better. Launched in 2016 with one perfectly designed carry-on, we now offer a range of luggage and travel essentials for every journey. Together we create, innovate, and embark on this journey as a community of travelers, helping to make travel more seamless for everyone.
Join The Crew
We are hiring a Digital Product Designer to join our Digital team. This role reports to the Sr. Manager, Digital User Experience and takes Away further by executing and supporting UX and digital design work for our responsive mobile and desktop e-commerce experiences.
In this individual contributor role, you will seamlessly alternate between strategic planning and hands-on execution. Working across cross-functional teams, you will elevate the Away customer experience from discovery to post-purchase by creating responsive web designs and launching A/B tests. You will utilize Shopify and other specialized tools to bring digital concepts to life, while also helping the UX and Digital teams explore how AI can enhance our workflows, boost speed, and improve design quality.
What you'll do as the Digital Product Designer
  • You'll execute and support UX and digital product design work for responsive ecommerce experiences across mobile and desktop, ensuring our digital experiences are simple, intuitive, engaging, and brand-right
  • You'll manage design tasks from brief through launch, including creating sketches, user flows, wireframes, and final design specs, while partnering on user research and QA support
  • You'll identify, plan, and solve design problems, translating customer insights and feedback into design solutions that improve the shopping journey
  • You'll support the building and updating of digital experiences, collaborating with engineering and product to utilize Shopify, GemPages, or similar ecommerce/CMS tools to ensure design intent matches implementation
  • You'll collaborate with your manager and functional leads to set up, QA, launch, and iterate on A/B tests and other digital experiments based on your designs
  • You'll partner regularly with peers across Ecommerce, Digital Product, Creative, Brand, and Engineering to bring new digital experiences and optimizations to life
  • You'll utilize customer insights, analytics, and test results to inform design decisions and consistently identify opportunities for improvement
  • You'll proactively participate in retrospectives and team discussions to identify gaps and make recommendations that improve our UX and digital workflows
  • You'll embody Away's core values and actively help maintain our design system, UX patterns, and digital design standards to ensure consistency across customer touchpoints and how Away shows up across them

Who you are
  • You have a minimum of 4 years of experience in digital product/UX design, with a strong portfolio showcasing responsive web experiences across mobile and desktop
  • You have past experience designing for a consumer brand or retail business, and are well-versed in designing conversion-focused, customer journey-driven experiences; Shopify, GePages, and/or CMS tools experience is strongly preferred
  • You have experience with design tools such as Figma and are highly comfortable creating user flows, wireframes, prototypes, design specs, and polished UI design
  • You have experience utilizing analytics, research, customer feedback, and/or A/B testing to inform your design decisions and consistently identify areas for improvement
  • You have experience and enthusiasm leveraging AI-powered design tools (e.g., Figma AI plugins, generative layout assistants) to accelerate the concept-to-wireframe phase while maintaining strict brand alignment
  • Ability to utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) to synthesize qualitative user research, heatmaps, and A/B testing data into clear, proposed UX action items to review and prioritize with your team
  • You're a human-centered designer who values design research and knows how to apply customer insights pragmatically to design problems within business and technical constraints
  • You are comfortable working in a small, nimble team where no task is too small and where strong design judgment, ownership, and adaptability matter
  • You're creative and innovative; you love to build great new things that are fresh and unique while staying on brand
  • You're agile, and motivated by a fast-paced and ever changing environment
  • You're passionate about transforming travel for all (but that's a given!)

Excited to join the team, but not sure you meet all of the qualifications? Please apply, we'd still love to hear from you.
Who We Are
  • We're travelers. Travel is about the journey - the transformative experiences and the growth each trip offers. All employees are encouraged to take time to get away through our variety of time away from work offerings.
  • We're driven. The work we do matters and collectively drives impact. No matter the job title, everyone at Away is a meaningful contributor in unlocking our ever growing potential.
  • We're supportive. We value the entirety of your life's journey, not just the milestones. You'll find an environment that celebrates balance, understanding that your personal passions and commitments outside of work, are threads of the same fabric that makes you unique.

What We Offer
Our total rewards are inclusive of both compensation and benefits. What we offer within a salary range is dependent on a number of factors, including scope and qualifications for the role, skillset, and balancing internal equity relative to other Away employees. Salary and benefit offerings are reviewed during phone screenings to ensure alignment.
  • Compensation: $115,000.00-$120,000.00 annually
  • This role is eligible to participate in Away's Annual Company Performance Incentive Bonus Plan, the terms of which are determined at the discretion of the company
  • Equity Grant: commensurate with level determined at the discretion of the company
  • Benefits Overview:
    • Take care of yourself and your family through our health insurance offerings
    • Invest in your future by participating in our 401(k) (with a company match!)
    • Find balance through our many paid time off programs (vacation, wellbeing, holidays, summer Fridays, and compassion leave - just to name a few!)
    • Build your travel uniform through discount codes, product stipends, and giveaways
    • Give back through company-sponsored volunteer and charitable opportunities

How We Work
This is an office-based position that works from our Soho, NYC office four days a week. Our working hours are 9am-6pm et, but we embrace a common-sense approach to flexibility in the workplace. It's about being present, engaged, and balancing work with real-life needs.
Our Commitment
As a company that values diversity, equity, and inclusion, Away seeks individuals of all backgrounds and experiences to apply for this opportunity. We're creating an environment where everyone can thrive. Our customers are global and diverse, so we're building a team that is too. Through initiatives like our Employee Resource Groups, anti-racism training, and bias prevention initiatives, we're building the cultural foundation that gives people the emotional and physical space to bring their authentic selves to work.
