Position Overview

Concepts NREC is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design and development of advanced turbomachinery systems and components. This role combines hands-on mechanical design, engineering leadership, and project execution while working closely with aerodynamicists, structural analysts, mechanical design engineers, manufacturing partners, test engineers, and clients.  The successful candidate will have extensive experience designing high-performance rotating machinery and will serve as a technical mentor to a growing mechanical design team. This position offers the opportunity to influence engineering standards, design methods, and future product development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mechanical Design and Development
  • Design and develop advanced turbomachinery components and assemblies, including compressors, turbines, pumps, expanders, and supporting systems.
  • Create design solutions that satisfy performance, manufacturability, reliability, and cost objectives.
  • Support machinery development from conceptual design through detail design, manufacturing, assembly, testing, and field support.
  • Recommend appropriate materials, manufacturing methods, tolerances, and assembly procedures.
  • Collaborate with aerodynamics, structural analysis, rotordynamics, manufacturing, and test engineering teams.
  • Support troubleshooting, root-cause investigations, and design improvements for operating equipment.
Engineering Leadership
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to a small team of Mechanical Design Engineers and CAD personnel.
  • Assist with planning, prioritization, and execution of design activities across multiple programs.
  • Participate in design reviews and promote compliance with engineering standards and best practices.
  • Review engineering drawings, models, bills of materials, and engineering change documentation.
  • Help develop and implement improved design processes, standards, and engineering practices.
Client and Program Support
  • Interface directly with customers to understand requirements and communicate technical solutions.
  • Contribute to proposal development, technical planning, and project execution strategies.
  • Support sales and business development activities by providing technical input and identifying new opportunities.
  • Work closely with project managers to support successful execution of engineering programs.
Configuration and Product Data Management
  • Maintain engineering data within company Product Data Management (PDM) systems.
  • Support configuration management and engineering change processes.
  • Promote best practices for document control, revision management, and design traceability.
Requirements:

  Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering experience.
  • 10+ years of mechanical design experience, including a minimum of 3 years of turbomachinery design experience.
  • Strong understanding of rotating equipment, including turbines, compressors, pumps, or similar machinery.
  • Proficiency in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) in accordance with ANSI Y14.5.
  • Significant experience with 2D and 3D CAD modeling and mechanical design documentation.
  • Experience creating and reviewing detailed manufacturing drawings.
  • Product Data Management (PDM) experience is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, guide, mentor, and develop mechanical design engineers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical priorities in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong working knowledge of SolidWorks is highly preferred.
  • Experience working within a structured Quality Management System (QMS) environment is beneficial.
  • Experience supporting products through manufacturing, assembly, and testing.
  • Previous supervisory or engineering management experience.
  • Experience with precision rotating equipment and high-speed machinery.
  • Familiarity with design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly principles.
  • Working knowledge of machining, fabrication, welding, and advanced manufacturing processes.
