About the role of the Quality Engineer IV
Are you interested in defining and driving quality? Do you enjoy taking the lead on projects and mentoring less experienced engineers? Then, the Quality Engineer IV (QE IV) in Premera's IT Engineering department may be the role for you. The QE IV will have a critical role in filling a gap in Premera's Quality Engineering capability by introducing dedicated healthcare domain expertise to define end-to-end testing requirements across all programs and production operations. The QE IV will be accountable for defining what must be validated from a member, provider, and claims perspective, ensuring that testing reflects real-world healthcare workflows and regulatory requirements.
In this position, the QE IV will help lead a partnership with product, engineering, and testing teams to map end-to-end customer journeys, translate business processes into comprehensive test scenarios, and identify critical edge cases, data dependencies, and compliance considerations. In addition, the Quality Engineer IV leads healthcare-specific test data strategy, defining data models and reusable datasets that support accurate, compliant, and scalable testing, including enterprise initiatives such as AI-driven test data management. This Engineer complements the existing Quality Engineering (QE) structure by establishing clear accountability for domain-driven test definition, enabling technical QE resources to focus on execution strategy and automation, and allowing vendor teams to efficiently execute against well-defined scenarios.
What you'll do
  • Partner with business and IT leaders to identify and understand multi-faceted problems or improvement opportunities.
  • Partner with the development teams, business partners, architecture, and customers to understand project requirements, provide technical excellence and oversight, and resolve technical challenges guaranteeing code quality.
  • Serve as the primary engineering and strategic implementation partners, ensuring clear, effective , and timely communication.
  • Oversee the review process of code, ensuring compliance with best practices, Premera standards, and architectural guidelines. Responsible for vendor oversight and code sign-off ensuring an effective relationship and high-quality outcomes of vendor work.
  • Analyze project data and metrics to identify trends, patterns, and areas of concern, and make data-driven recommendations to enhance the delivery of software.
  • Train and enforce governance processes to ensure compliance with company standards, best practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee engineering excellence and continuous automation. This includes testing associated with cross-functional project team and in-team efforts.
  • Act as technical and business leader sharing knowledge, and expertise with others inside team as well as with other customers. Proactively contribute to knowledge sharing across Premera developer community.
  • Stay current in best practices, technology trends and the organization's business while mentoring and sharing knowledge gained with others. Maintain expertise in one or more technical areas. Provide advice and mentoring to other engineers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What you'll bring
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or information systems. (Required)
  • Eight (8) years of software development experience, knowledge of software development lifecycle, and skills to utilize one or more programming languages. (Required)
  • Experience in healthcare industry or a highly regulated environment. (Strongly Preferred)
  • Experience working with cloud solutions. (Preferred)
  • Technical knowledge and experience with specific technical tools used at Premera (i.e. Facets) or required for open position. (Preferred)
  • Previous experience in an Agile environment. (Preferred)
  • Exposure to API and service-based technologies. (Preferred)
  • Experience using and creating automated test tools. (Preferred)

The salary range for this role is posted below; we generally target up to and around the midpoint of the range.
National Salary Range:
$118,900.00 - $202,100.00
National Plus Salary Range:
$135,600.00 - $230,500.00
*National Plus salary range is used in higher cost of labor markets including Western Washington and Alaska.
