Now Hiring: Medical Examiner

Are you an experienced investigator and compassionate leader looking for a meaningful career? Join our team asMedical Examiner, where you'll play a vital role in serving families, supporting the justice system, and protecting public health.

As the Medical Examiner, you will lead the Office of the Medical Examiner, overseeing all aspects of death investigations in accordance with Wisconsin State Statutes. This is a unique opportunity to combine investigative expertise, leadership, and public service while working closely with law enforcement, healthcare professionals, forensic specialists, and grieving families.

What You'll Do

As Medical Examiner, you will:

  • Conduct medicolegal death investigations by responding to death scenes, evaluating circumstances, reviewing medical histories, interviewing witnesses, and determining the initial cause and manner of death.
  • Provide compassionate notification and support to next of kin while coordinating the respectful disposition of decedents.
  • Determine the need for autopsies, toxicology testing, radiology, and consultation with law enforcement, forensic pathologists, crime laboratories, and the District Attorney.
  • Collect, preserve, maintain, and document evidence while ensuring accurate records, photographs, and investigative documentation.
  • Prepare cremation authorizations, disinterment permits, and death certificates.
  • Maintain comprehensive investigative reports and submit required statistics and reports to state agencies.
  • Lead and supervise the Office of the Medical Examiner by hiring, mentoring, and directing the Chief Deputy and Deputy Medical Examiners while ensuring continuous 24/7 departmental coverage.
  • Plan, direct, and oversee departmental operations in compliance with Wisconsin Statutes, including Chapters 979, 30.67(6), 48.981, 59.34, and other applicable laws.
