Job description

3D CAD Designer / Project Manager

Location: Dallas, TX
Job Type: Full-Time

About Allied Welding Systems

Allied Welding Systems is a leading bulk material handling fabrication and engineering company specializing in industrial process equipment, material handling equipment, structural steel, ductwork, tanks, hoppers, chutes, conveyors, and custom assemblies. We partner with customers across many industrial manufacturing sectors.

We are seeking a motivated 3D CAD Designer / Project Manager to join our growing engineering team. This position combines mechanical design, project management, and customer interaction, providing an opportunity to see projects through from concept to completion.

Position Summary

The 3D CAD Designer / Project Engineer is responsible for designing custom fabricated equipment, developing manufacturing drawings, coordinating projects with customers and production, and ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.

This role requires someone who enjoys solving engineering challenges while working closely with fabrication, purchasing, and customers throughout the entire project lifecycle.

Primary Responsibilities

Engineering & Design

  • Design custom fabricated equipment using AutoCAD Inventor.
  • Develop detailed manufacturing drawings and fabrication packages.
  • Create assembly drawings, weldments, sheet metal layouts, and BOMs.
  • Perform design calculations and verify equipment meets project requirements.
  • Review customer drawings and specifications.
  • Create models for hoppers, ductwork, chutes, augers, pressure vessels, and structural assemblies.
  • Prepare fabrication and installation drawings.

Project Engineering

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously from order entry through shipment.
  • Coordinate with customers regarding project requirements and design revisions.
  • Review project schedules and monitor engineering milestones.
  • Work with purchasing to procure materials and components.
  • Support fabrication by answering technical questions and resolving shop issues.
  • Coordinate with Quality Control and Production to ensure specifications are met.
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings and customer review meetings.

Customer Support

  • Serve as the primary engineering contact for assigned projects.
  • Review RFQs and assist with estimating.
  • Provide technical support to sales and customers.
  • Recommend design improvements and value engineering opportunities.

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Drafting, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical design or project engineering.
  • Must be willing to travel to customer sites
  • Proficient in Autodesk Inventor, or similar 3D CAD software.
  • Experience creating fabrication drawings.
  • Ability to interpret customer drawings and engineering specifications.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is someone who:

  • Thinks like an engineer while designing like a fabricator.
  • Enjoys solving unique customer challenges.
  • Can manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Works well with welders, machinists, production supervisors, and customers.
  • Takes ownership of projects from concept through completion.

Why Allied Welding Systems?

At Allied Welding Systems, you'll work on one-of-a-kind industrial projects—not repetitive production work. Every project presents a new engineering challenge, giving you the opportunity to expand your technical skills while making a direct impact on the success of our customers and our company.

If you're looking for a role where you can combine engineering, design, and project management in a collaborative environment, we'd like to hear from you.
