What does a full time CNC punch programmer do?

A Full Time CNC Punch Programmer is responsible for creating and optimizing computer numerical control (CNC) programs that direct machines to punch, cut, or shape sheet metal and other materials according to engineering specifications. They translate technical drawings into machine instructions, select appropriate tools, and ensure efficient production processes. Additionally, they may troubleshoot issues, adjust programs for quality and efficiency, and collaborate with engineers and production staff to meet manufacturing goals.

What are some common challenges full time CNC punch programmers face during project setups, and how can they be addressed?

Full Time CNC Punch Programmers often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex engineering drawings, optimizing tool paths for efficiency, and minimizing machine downtime during setup changes. Addressing these challenges typically involves close collaboration with design engineers, ongoing communication with machine operators, and staying current with software updates and machine capabilities. Developing strong problem-solving skills and maintaining attention to detail can greatly improve setup accuracy and production flow, making the role both dynamic and rewarding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time CNC punch programmer, and why are they important?

Job description

Build Something You Can Be Proud Of

Metko is a third-generation, family-owned manufacturer that has built its reputation on quality workmanship, dependable service, and the people behind every part we produce.

We are looking for a full-time Production Associate to join our first and second shift teams to work inthe capacity of a Floater/Utility role. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on work, likes variety, and wants to develop a broad range of metal-fabrication skills.

Rather than remaining at one workstation every day, you will support different areas of production and help keep important customer projects moving.

Experienced in manufacturing? We would be glad to put that experience to work. Still developing your skills? If you are dependable, mechanically inclined, and willing to learn, our team can help you grow.

What You'll Do

  • Drill, tap, grind, deburr, and finish metal components.
  • Operate manufacturing equipment such as CNC punch presses and CNC rolling machines.
  • Perform basic assembly work using shop tools and equipment.
  • Read work orders and blueprints to produce quality parts.
  • Check completed work with calipers, micrometers, and tape measures.
  • Complete production and quality documentation.
  • Work alongside teammates to meet customer expectations for quality and delivery.

What Will Help You Succeed

  • Dependability and a strong attendance record.
  • A positive, team-oriented approach and clear communication.
  • Good mechanical ability and comfort using hand and power tools.
  • Attention to detail and pride in producing quality work.
  • Basic math, computer, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to work safely in an active manufacturing environment.
  • An interest in reading manufacturing blueprints - or a willingness to learn.

Previous production experience is helpful, particularly experience using hand tools, power tools, measuring equipment, or CNC machinery. CNC experience is not required.

Grow With a Local Manufacturer

At Metko, you are not joining a distant corporation. You are joining a third-generation, family-owned Wisconsin manufacturer where your work contributes directly to the products we deliver and the relationships we build with our customers.

Ready for steady first-shift work, hands-on variety, and room to grow? Apply today and start building your future with Metko.
