Full Time Cnc Machine Shop information

What is a full time CNC machine shop?

A Full Time CNC Machine Shop is a manufacturing facility that operates computer numerical control (CNC) machines to produce parts and components from metal, plastic, or other materials. These shops operate with skilled machinists and technicians who work full-time to program, set up, and run CNC equipment. The shop can handle a variety of production needs, from custom prototypes to large-volume manufacturing. Full time operation ensures consistent output, faster turnaround times, and reliable quality for their clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a full time CNC machine shop role?

To thrive in a full-time CNC machine shop role, you need a solid understanding of machining processes, blueprint reading, and experience with CNC programming, often supported by technical training or an apprenticeship. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, CNC controllers (like Fanuc or Haas), and measurement tools such as calipers and micrometers is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication help ensure precision and safety in a team environment. These skills and qualities are essential for producing high-quality parts efficiently and maintaining smooth shop operations.

What are some common challenges faced by CNC machine shop employees in a full time role, and how can they be addressed?

Full-time CNC machine shop employees often encounter challenges such as tight production deadlines, maintaining high precision under pressure, and troubleshooting machine malfunctions. Adapting to evolving technology and learning new software or machine controls can also be demanding. These challenges can be managed by staying proactive with regular machine maintenance, participating in ongoing training, and fostering open communication with supervisors and team members for prompt problem-solving. Many shops encourage collaboration and mentoring, which helps new hires quickly adapt and build confidence in their skills.

CNC Machinist

Speed Machine LLC — LaGrange, GA Full-Time | $25–$38/hr, depending on experience

About Speed Machine LLC

Speed Machine LLC is a small, precision CNC machine shop based in LaGrange, GA. We are a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), SAM registered, and currently pursuing ISO 9001:2015 certification.

We produce precision production and prototype parts for customers in the aerospace, automotive, defense, and industrial sectors. Our work regularly holds tight tolerances, with some parts required to hold sub‐.001" tolerances.

The Role

We're looking for an experienced Machinist to join our small, close-knit team and hit the ground running. This is a hands-on shop where you'll be responsible for your own setups, programs, and quality — not just running a cycle someone else built.

Day-to-day, you'll be expected to:

  • Set up and run CNC mills and lathes (3 through 5-axis milling, CNC turning) for both production and prototype work
  • Program parts conversationally and/or using CAM software, and edit/optimize existing programs at the machine
  • Select and apply appropriate work holding and fixturing for a wide variety of jobs
  • Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and GD&T callouts
  • Perform in-process and final inspection using basic measuring/inspection tools, holding tolerances to sub‐.001" where required
  • Troubleshoot and solve process, tooling, and fixturing problems independently
  • Adhere to and help support our quality control standards as we build out our ISO 9001-aligned quality system
  • Work independently with minimal supervision in a small shop environment

Requirements

Required:

  • Proven experience working as a machinist
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Foundational knowledge of machining and machining processes: 3–5 axis milling, CNC programming (conversational and CAM), CNC turning, and production/prototype work
  • Working knowledge of work holding and fixturing
  • Strong independent problem-solving ability, including on complex issues
  • Proficiency with basic measuring/inspection tools

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of experience as a machinist
  • Technical or trade school education; a degree in a machining-related trade is a plus
  • Experience running Haas machines
  • Experience programming in Mastercam
  • Knowledge of building/designing fixtures

Pay & Benefits

  • $25.00–$38.00/hour, depending on experience
  • Health insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Paid time off / paid holidays
