Full Time Cancer Bioinformatics information

What is a full time cancer bioinformatics?

A full time cancer bioinformatics job involves using computational and statistical methods to analyze biological data related to cancer. Professionals in this role work with large datasets, such as genomic or clinical data, to identify patterns and insights that can advance cancer research, diagnosis, and treatment. They often collaborate with biologists, clinicians, and other researchers to interpret data, develop new analysis tools, and contribute to scientific publications. The role typically requires expertise in biology, computer science, and data analysis, and is usually based in research institutions, hospitals, or biotech companies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time cancer bioinformatician?

To thrive as a Full Time Cancer Bioinformatician, you need expertise in molecular biology, genomics, and strong programming skills (often in Python or R), usually supported by an advanced degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field. Familiarity with high-throughput sequencing data, bioinformatics pipelines, and tools such as GATK, Bioconductor, and cloud computing platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting complex data and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. These skills ensure accurate data analysis, meaningful insights, and successful integration of bioinformatics into cancer research and clinical applications.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in a full time cancer bioinformatics role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in full-time cancer bioinformatics roles often encounter challenges such as managing large-scale genomic datasets, integrating heterogeneous data sources, and staying updated with rapidly evolving analytical tools. Collaborating closely with both laboratory scientists and clinicians can also present communication hurdles, as translating complex bioinformatics results into actionable insights requires interdisciplinary understanding. These challenges can be addressed through continuous learning, leveraging robust data management pipelines, and fostering open communication within multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Full Time Cancer Bioinformatics vs Full Time Genomic Data Analyst?

AspectFull Time Cancer BioinformaticsFull Time Genomic Data Analyst
Required CredentialsDegree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related field; experience with cancer datasetsDegree in Bioinformatics, Data Science, or related field; experience with genomic data analysis
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, biotech companies, academic institutions focusing on cancer researchHealthcare institutions, research organizations analyzing genomic data
Industry UsagePrimarily in cancer research and personalized medicineBroader genomic data analysis across various health conditions

Full Time Cancer Bioinformatics specialists focus on analyzing cancer-specific datasets, often requiring specialized knowledge in oncology. In contrast, Full Time Genomic Data Analysts work with a wider range of genomic data across multiple health areas. Both roles require similar technical skills but differ in their specific focus and application within the industry.

Job description

Dovetail Genomics is an EdenRoc Sciences startup company based in Santa Cruz, CA developing cutting-edge genomics technologies for vastly improving genome assembly, uncovering critical structural variation information, as well as many applications for studying epigenetics. We are a diverse, talented, multi-disciplinary team innovating in the field of genomics, with the goal of leaving a lasting impact on the world by providing researchers and clinicians with tools for better informing biological understanding.
This role is located in Scotts Valley offices as we find one-on-one in person collaboration very valuable.
We are looking for an outstanding Bioinformatics Scientist to drive development of new clinical applications of the proximity ligation technology created by Dovetail Genomics. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of developing advanced NGS-based analytical methods, ideally with a focus on cancer genomics. Prior experience with proximity ligation (Hi-C) is not required, but it is expected that it will be picked up quickly. He/she should be driven by developing impactful products and enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary environment. This position will interact closely with colleagues in computational biology, molecular biology, commercial, and finance.
The role of Bioinformatics Scientist requires a high level of scientific accomplishment, innovative thinking, and entrepreneurial spirit. Individuals applying for this position must be creative, self-starters, strategic thinkers, action-oriented, flexible in changing direction and methods, thrive in a fast-paced environment, excel at managing multiple priorities, succeed in communicating with all levels within the organization and provide immediate contribution with a minimum of hands-on supervision.
Key Responsibilities
  • Investigate and drive the development of novel analytical methods that leverage large Hi-C datasets to enable new products and services.
  • Collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary R&D teams on assay development & benchmarking.
  • Support production & commercial development teams with data analysis and interpretation.
  • Regularly present your work both internally and externally, effectively communicating your methods and results to audiences with diverse scientific and non-scientific backgrounds.
  • Contribute and author bioinformatics-focused white papers, posters, and publications.

Skills And Background
  • PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, or equivalent. Postdoctoral and/or industry experience is a major plus.
  • Experience developing and implementing novel bioinformatics algorithms and pipelines.
  • Extensive experience processing, integrating, and visualizing large, multi-omics datasets (WGS, RNA-Seq, etc.).
  • Proficiency with agentic AI for robust code development and scientific workflows.
  • Experience with the human pangenome and pangenome-based analysis is a plus.
  • Expertise in Python programming and demonstrated ability to learn and adopt bioinformatics techniques and resources.
  • Experience developing within a Linux-based cloud-computing environment (AWS preferred).
  • Ability to quickly become an expert in new fields.
  • Exceptional technical depth in cancer genomics, cancer biology, oncology, or similar.
  • Excellent written, presentation, and verbal communication skills.

As a full-time Dovetail Genomics employee, you will receive Fortune 500 level benefits including comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, matching 401k plan, and generous paid time off.
