Description
Under general supervision, performs technical work enforcing State and local building codes. Is responsible for reviewing building construction projects to determine adherence to such building codes as adopted and set forth by Town ordinance. Reports to Chief Structural Inspector.
Minimum Requirements (Must meet by the closing date of the posting unless otherwise stated)
  • Graduation from an accredited High School or GED equivalent;
  • Applicants must be certified by the state's Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB) as a Standard Inspector OR be a Florida Registered Architect / Florida Licensed Professional Engineer.

Additionally, applicants must be certified by BORA through one (1) of the following specialized pathways:
  1. Architect / Engineer Path: Florida Registered Architect or Licensed Professional Engineer in the structural discipline, with two (2) years of High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) experience, or must pass the BORA HVHZ examination.
  2. Standard Inspector Path: BCAIB-certified Standard Inspector in the Structural discipline with five (5) years of experience within the State of Florida (including two years of HVHZ experience or passing the BORA HVHZ exam). Must acquire an Unlimited General Contractor (G.C.) license by exam within two (2) years of initial inspector certification.
  3. Licensed Contractor Path: Licensed General Contractor with at least five (5) years of active structural discipline experience within the State of Florida (including two years of HVHZ experience or passing the BORA HVHZ exam).
  4. Supervisory Construction Path: Five (5) years of structural construction experience in a supervisory capacity, with at least two (2) years within an HVHZ jurisdiction or passing the BORA HVHZ exam. Must acquire an Unlimited G.C. license by exam from the CILB, Broward County Examining Board, or Miami-Dade Construction Trades Qualifying Board within two (2) years of initial inspector certification.
  5. General Construction Path: Ten (10) years of structural construction experience, with at least two (2) years within an HVHZ jurisdiction or passing the BORA HVHZ exam. Must acquire an Unlimited G.C. license by exam from the CILB, Broward County Examining Board, or Miami-Dade Construction Trades Qualifying Board within two (2) years of initial inspector certification.

Essential Functions
  • Inspects construction projects so as to enforce the South Florida Building Code and related Town ordinances governing minimum standards and requirements of new construction, alterations, repairs and materials used.
  • Inspects construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans and construction and safety practices; examines the plot plans, the structural framing and the general arrangement of the building facilities for quality of design, materials and workmanship.
  • Performs inspections of new and existing residences, businesses and other buildings for conformance with safety standards, codes, and ordinances; issues inspection certificates for approved installation.
  • Maintains all necessary records and reports on inspections.
  • Confers with other inspectors and the Chief Structural Inspector on questions of departmental policies and other inspections problems.
  • Confers with contractors, architects, engineers and others regarding construction codes and building plans.
  • May review and pass upon plans for building construction and alternations.
