What does a full time arborist do?

A full time arborist is a professional who specializes in the care and maintenance of trees. Their work includes tasks such as pruning, planting, diagnosing tree diseases, removing hazardous trees, and advising on proper tree care. Arborists often work for landscaping companies, municipalities, or as independent contractors, ensuring the health and safety of trees in urban and rural environments. They may also conduct tree risk assessments and provide recommendations for tree preservation or removal.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time arborist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Arborist, you need a strong understanding of tree biology, pruning techniques, and safety protocols, often supported by formal training or certification such as ISA Certified Arborist. Familiarity with chainsaws, climbing equipment, rigging systems, and industry-standard arboriculture software is essential. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help in assessing tree health, communicating with clients, and working safely with crew members. These skills and qualities ensure the safe, effective care of trees and landscapes, and help maintain client satisfaction and workplace safety.

Full-time arborists often encounter challenges such as working at heights, dealing with unpredictable weather, and managing physically demanding tasks like tree climbing and heavy lifting. To manage these challenges, arborists rely on rigorous safety protocols, continuous skills training, and specialized equipment such as harnesses and chainsaws. Collaboration with a well-trained team is essential, as most tasks—especially large tree removals or emergency storm work—require clear communication and coordinated efforts. Staying updated on best practices and maintaining physical fitness are also important for a successful and safe career in arboriculture.
