What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of web development principles. Familiarity with frameworks (like React, Angular, Node.js), databases (SQL/NoSQL), version control (Git), and knowledge of deployment tools or cloud services are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication set exceptional Full Stack Developers apart. These skills are vital for efficiently building, deploying, and maintaining complete web applications while collaborating across technical and non-technical teams.

How do Full Stack Developers typically balance working on both front-end and back-end tasks within a project?

Full Stack Developers often split their time between front-end and back-end responsibilities based on the project's current needs. In agile or collaborative environments, they may focus on developing user interfaces one week and optimizing server-side logic or databases the next. Effective communication with team members—such as designers, product managers, and other developers—is key to prioritizing tasks and ensuring smooth handoffs between layers. This flexibility allows Full Stack Developers to gain a holistic view of the application and contribute to multiple stages of the development process.

What are Full Stack developers?

Full Stack developers are professionals who have the skills to work on both the front-end and back-end parts of web applications. This means they can handle the user interface, server-side logic, databases, and even deployment processes. They are versatile and can work with a variety of programming languages and frameworks, making them valuable assets to software development teams. Full Stack developers often collaborate closely with designers, other developers, and stakeholders to build and maintain complete, functional products.

Job description

About AGENCYOF

AGENCYOF is a strategy-led, performance-driven agency working across hospitality, animal health, outdoor equipment, construction, technology, and mission-driven brands. We are 11 people. We move fast. We operate lean. And we care deeply about the quality of the work and the strength of our client relationships.

We are not a layered organization. You will work directly alongside our CTO. You will contribute to real client work from day one. If you want mentorship with actual stakes attached to it, you'll find it here.

The Role

This is an early-to-mid career opportunity for a developer who is ready to grow fast in a hands-on, high-ownership environment. You will work directly with our CTO across the full development lifecycle - building client-facing websites and web applications, contributing to technical decisions, and developing the skills and instincts to take on increasing responsibility over time.

You are not here to maintain. You are here to build.

What You'll Do

Build for Clients

  • Develop client-facing websites and web applications across a variety of industries and project types
  • Take a functional specification and independently produce a deployable, production-ready application
  • Deploy and maintain applications across platforms like Vercel, DigitalOcean, and AWS

Collaborate and Contribute

  • Work closely with the CTO on technical decisions and feature delivery
  • Participate in code review and adhere to version control standards
  • Research and present emerging tools, technologies, and development practices

Use AI With Judgment

  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools like Cursor and Claude Code as productivity multipliers
  • Be transparent about how and where AI tools are used
  • Know the difference between AI as a crutch and AI as an accelerant

What Success Looks Like

By 6 Months:

  • You've shipped real work for real clients with minimal oversight
  • You're contributing meaningfully to technical conversations with the CTO
  • You understand how AGENCYOF's development practice connects to the broader agency

By 12 Months:

  • You've expanded your technical range beyond your starting point
  • You're trusted to own a project end-to-end
  • You've identified at least one process, tool, or workflow that made the team better

Who Thrives Here

  • Someone who takes initiative before being asked
  • Someone genuinely curious about emerging tools and how to apply them
  • Someone who sees client work as a feature, not a distraction from "real" development
  • Someone who can receive feedback, adapt, and come back sharper

Who This Is Not For

  • Someone who needs every task defined before they can move
  • Someone uncomfortable working in ambiguity or across multiple project types simultaneously
  • Someone who treats AI tools as a shortcut around understanding
  • Someone who wants to specialize early and stay narrow

What You Bring

Required:

  • Foundational knowledge in software engineering through a bootcamp, associate's, or bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Working knowledge of React, JavaScript, Next.js, and Tailwind CSS
  • Proficiency with Git-based version control including branching and pull request workflows
  • Demonstrated experience with AI coding tools
  • Genuine interest in UI/UX design principles
  • Ability to independently deploy to Vercel or equivalent

Preferred:

  • Experience with Laravel and PHP
  • Proficiency in Linux terminal environments and hosted server infrastructure
  • Familiarity with AWS or DigitalOcean
  • Experience with native mobile apps or PWAs
  • Relevant security compliance certifications

Benefits

  • 100% employer-paid health, dental, vision, and short-term disability
  • 3% Simple IRA match - day one
  • Flexible PTO - we trust you to manage your time

How to Apply

Submit a current resume, a link to your GitHub profile, and a brief paragraph describing a project you've built - what problem it solved and what you learned from it. Links to live projects or repositories are strongly encouraged.
