What is the job of a full stack web developer?

A full stack web developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining both the front-end (user interface) and back-end (server, database) components of web applications. They typically work with languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and server-side technologies, and often use frameworks and tools such as React, Node.js, and databases to create complete web solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Web Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (such as Node.js, Python, or Ruby) technologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, databases (SQL/NoSQL), version control systems (Git), and cloud platforms is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and collaboration skills help you manage complex projects and communicate effectively with team members. These skills ensure the delivery of robust, scalable, and user-friendly web applications that meet client and business needs.

Will AI replace full stack dev?

AI is unlikely to fully replace full stack web developers, as the role requires complex problem-solving, creativity, and understanding of user needs that AI cannot replicate. Instead, AI tools can assist developers by automating repetitive tasks and enhancing productivity, allowing developers to focus on more strategic aspects of development. Staying updated with programming languages, frameworks, and AI integration can help full stack developers remain valuable in the evolving tech landscape.

Is full stack web development a good career?

Full stack web development is a viable career option with strong demand for skills in both front-end and back-end technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and server-side frameworks. It offers opportunities for growth, diverse projects, and competitive salaries, especially for those with experience in popular tools like React, Node.js, and cloud platforms. Continuous learning and adaptability are important for long-term success in this field.

What are some common challenges Full Stack Web Developers face when balancing front-end and back-end responsibilities?

Full Stack Web Developers often encounter the challenge of context-switching between front-end and back-end tasks, which can require different skill sets and approaches. Managing time efficiently to address both user interface concerns and server-side logic is crucial, especially in fast-paced environments where priorities can shift quickly. Additionally, staying updated with evolving frameworks and best practices on both ends of the stack can be demanding, but it's essential for delivering cohesive, high-quality applications. Collaboration with designers, product managers, and other developers is also key to ensuring all layers of the application align with project goals.

What is Full Stack Web Development?

Full Stack Web Development refers to the practice of working on both the front-end (client side) and back-end (server side) of web applications. Full Stack Developers are skilled in technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript for front-end development, as well as languages such as Python, Ruby, Java, PHP, or Node.js for back-end development. They also work with databases, servers, APIs, and version control systems. The role requires a broad understanding of how web applications function as a whole, enabling developers to build and maintain complete, functional websites and web applications.

Is full stack dev still in demand?

Full stack web development remains in high demand due to the need for versatile developers skilled in both front-end and back-end technologies like JavaScript, React, Node.js, and databases. Companies value full stack developers for their ability to handle entire projects, and demand is expected to grow as digital transformation continues across industries.

This is your invitation.

Bring your ideas, your grit, and your care for people.
Join us and shape the future of care.

We are seeking a Senior Fullstack Developer for our Identity and Access Management (IAM) Engineering team.

As a Senior Developer, you will play a critical role in developing and maintaining all things IAM, including authentication, authorization, and identity. You'll contribute directly to the systems powering sign-up, login, SSO integrations, and our OAuth flows. You'll work closely with your teammates, engineering leads, product, and security stakeholders to deliver secure, reliable, and scalable solutions.

This is how we like building software: https://fullscript.com/developer-handbook If you share our values, we'd be excited to talk with you!
What you'll do:
  • Collaborate with your pod - a small, focused team of full-stack engineers - to build and maintain IAM capabilities
  • Contribute to backend and frontend codebases with an eye toward reliability, scalability, and security
  • Participate in technical design discussions and help break down projects into clear, actionable tasks
  • Identify and suggest improvements to our authentication and authorization flows
  • Help support the maintenance and uptime of IAM systems, including investigating and resolving production issues
  • Work closely with product, security, and legal stakeholders to ensure compliance and integrity of user data and access
  • Stay informed on evolving security practices, frameworks, and technologies
What you bring to the table:
  • A collaborative mindset and a willingness to share knowledge and ideas with teammates
  • Passion for IAM and security - you care about protecting users and understanding the threat landscape
  • Experience with authentication protocols, SSO (SAML, OAuth), RBAC, and MFA
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • Hands-on experience with modern web development - we use Ruby on Rails, React, JavaScript/TypeScript, GraphQL, and Apollo
  • A commitment to writing clean, maintainable code and fostering strong engineering practices
What we can offer you:
  • Generous PTO and competitive pay
  • Fullscript's RRSP match program for financial health
  • Flexible benefits package and workplace wellness program
  • Training budget and company-wide learning initiatives
  • Discount on Fullscript catalog of products
  • Ability to work Wherever You Work Well*
*Our Wherever You Work Well philosophy means Fullscript teammates get to pick their own office - whether that's in-office, at home, or a bit of both
Compensation range
