Full Stack Web Development information

What is full stack web development?

Full Stack Web Development refers to the practice of working on both the front-end (client side) and back-end (server side) of web applications. Full Stack Developers are skilled in technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript for front-end development, as well as languages such as Python, Ruby, Java, PHP, or Node.js for back-end development. They also work with databases, servers, APIs, and version control systems. The role requires a broad understanding of how web applications function as a whole, enabling developers to build and maintain complete, functional websites and web applications.

What are some common challenges full stack web developers face when balancing front-end and back-end responsibilities?

Full Stack Web Developers often encounter the challenge of context-switching between front-end and back-end tasks, which can require different skill sets and approaches. Managing time efficiently to address both user interface concerns and server-side logic is crucial, especially in fast-paced environments where priorities can shift quickly. Additionally, staying updated with evolving frameworks and best practices on both ends of the stack can be demanding, but it's essential for delivering cohesive, high-quality applications. Collaboration with designers, product managers, and other developers is also key to ensuring all layers of the application align with project goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack web developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (such as Node.js, Python, or Ruby) technologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, databases (SQL/NoSQL), version control systems (Git), and cloud platforms is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and collaboration skills help you manage complex projects and communicate effectively with team members. These skills ensure the delivery of robust, scalable, and user-friendly web applications that meet client and business needs.

What is the difference between Full Stack Web Development vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack Web DeveloperFront End Developer
SkillsProficient in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client sides, often involved in full project development.Focuses primarily on designing and implementing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in startups and small teams requiring versatile developers.Common in larger teams with specialized roles, focusing on UI/UX design.

Full Stack Web Developers have a broader skill set covering both front-end and back-end development, enabling them to handle entire projects. Front End Developers specialize in creating engaging user interfaces. The choice depends on project needs and team structure.

Is full stack web development a good career?

Full stack web development is a viable career option with strong demand for professionals skilled in both front-end and back-end technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and server-side frameworks. It offers opportunities for growth, diverse projects, and competitive salaries, especially for those who continuously update their skills and gain experience with popular tools and frameworks. However, success depends on ongoing learning and adapting to evolving industry standards.

Is full stack web development still in demand?

Full stack web development remains in high demand as companies seek developers skilled in both front-end and back-end technologies, including frameworks like React, Angular, and Node.js. The role often requires knowledge of databases, version control, and deployment, with job growth driven by ongoing digital transformation across industries.

Job description

***This job requires active TS/SCI clearance.  Please apply only if you have an active TS/SCI clearance. ***

North Point Technology is looking to hire a Full-Stack Software Engineer to support the Chinook Program, delivering next-generation mission software for geospatial intelligence (GEOINT). The qualified candidate must have an active TS/SCI security clearance and will contribute across the full software development lifecycle - from architecture and design through coding and automated testing - as part of a collaborative Agile team focused on world-class national security solutions. The ideal candidate brings strong full-stack development skills, thrives in a fast-paced and inclusive environment, and is passionate about building software that directly supports the mission.

Responsibilities:
In this role you will contribute across the complete software development lifecycle - including work estimation, architecture and design, coding, and automated testing - within a customer-focused Agile team. You will take ownership of delivering system and application enhancements, break sizable tasks into manageable units with level-of-effort estimates, and partner with fellow engineers to design and document strong technical solutions. You will build software for problems that are not always clearly defined while keeping customer needs front and center, help remove obstacles for the development team alongside the Product Owner and technical leadership, and keep Agile and Scrum practices productive and on track. This is an opportunity to deliver mission-focused software that supports national security in a fast-paced, collaborative, and growth-oriented environment.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Rest API Development
  • Python or Java
  • SQL
  • Web Development
  • Django or JavaScript (Angular, React, etc)
  • Object-oriented programming in Python, Java, and JavaScript
  • Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Version control with Git and GitLab
  • Architecting, developing, and delivering complex software systems into production
  • Agile development and CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous delivery) tools and practices

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Front-end development with React
  • Software architecture patterns such as Client-Server and Model-View-Controller (MVC)
  • Multi-cloud experience across AWS, IBM Cloud, Google Cloud, Azure, and Oracle Cloud
  • AWS services such as S3, SQS, SNS, EC2, CloudFormation, and RDS
  • Experience as a Scrum Master for a software development or technical team
  • GEOINT domain experience applied to troubleshooting, optimizing, and validating system behavior and data outputs
  • Modern software design patterns and coding standards
  • AWS DevOps Engineer certification or similar

Qualifications:

  • Active TS/SCI security clearance with the ability to obtain a polygraph
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
